Herbal Coltsfoot Protects Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Against the Risk of Colitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.

The disease can be caused by infection, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis(CD)), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most cases of colitis are involved in the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly to those of ulcerative colitis.

Epidemiologically, damage and a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chemicals, such as antibiotics of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases induced both UC and CD.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is the outermost inner layer of the lining of the intestines which plays an essential role to ensure the adequate containment of undesirable luminal contents within the intestine and preserves the ability to absorb nutrients.

Additionally, the intestinal mucosal barrier also processes various immunological mediators, including cytokines and chemokines stimulated by gut microbiota and host immune responses, thus maintaining a well-balanced relationship between gut microbes and the host immune system.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier protects the colonic integrity by interacting with the gut microbiota and the immune response to prevent the inflammation of the colon that causes the onset of colitis.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers examined the anti-colitis effect of Tussilagone (TSL), a major component of Tussilago farfara.

On mice subjected to acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), tussilagone showed a significant protective effect by ameliorating weight loss, and colonic inflammatory damage.

Proteins associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 and the activity of myeloperoxidase in colonic tissues were inhibited by tussilagone-treated mice.

Furthermore, tussilagone treatment reduced the numbers of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the induction of cytokines and increased the numbers of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) involved the production of antioxidant enzymes in nuclei of colonic tissues.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " tussilagone treatment attenuated DSS-induced colitis in mice through inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and inducing Nrf2 pathways, indicating that tussilagone is a potent therapeutic candidate for the treatment of intestinal ".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cucurbitacin B Inhibits Non Small Lung Cancer Cells in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Lung cancer is a medical condition caused abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. Most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

Non-small lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer that accounts for 80% to 85% of all cases of lung cancers, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

Most common types of lung cancers include
*  Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung

* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, lung cancer is a leading cause of death among both men and women. Most people diagnosed with lung cancer are 65 or older, compared to a very small number of people diagnosed are younger than 45.

Most common prevalent factors of non-small cell lung cancer include
1. Smoking
Smoking is a major cause of lung cancer by enhancing oxidation stress by combining the inhaling air  with cancer-causing chemical substances (carcinogens) in the cigarette.
Normally, our body can withstand and repair this damage, but prolonged exposure your lung to these danger carcinogens can result in lung cancer development.

2. Second-hand smoke
Prolonged exposure to second-hand smoke can also increase the risk of lung cancer.

3. Exposure to certain chemicals
There is an increased risk of lung cancer for people who inhale or exposing certain industrial chemical such as radon gas, arsenic, chromium, nickel, etc. in the workplace.

4. Family history
Risk of lung cancer increased if one of the members of your direct family has lung cancer.

5. Lung disease
Risk of ling can caner increase if you have or previously had certain types of lung disease

6. Excessive drinking
According to the study by Freudenheim et al., R. Curtis Ellison MD suggested that alcohol intake of more than 2 drinks per day is associated with a small increased risk of lung cancer. This study, like others, suggests a weak, positive association between consuming larger amounts of alcohol (>2 drinks a day) and lung cancer risk.

Out of many risk factors, some researchers aging may be one of the major condition as most patients with lung cancer was diagnosed with the age of 65 and over.

Dr. Federico Venuta, the lead researcher wrote, "The respiratory system undergoes a number of structural, physiological and immunological changes with age. For this reason, at this stage of our life, it is not always easy to differentiate disease from a normal state".

And, "From the epidemiological point of view, early-stage lung cancer is observed more frequently in elderly patients; in fact, stage I disease increases from 79% in patients younger than 65 years to 87% in those above 75 years (). Also, resectability obviously increases with age (,): from 15.3% in those younger than 54 years to 25% above 75 years".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) with no side effects, researchers investigated Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a natural compound isolated from cucumber and other vegetables anti-NSCLC in vitro.

Four NSCLC cells (H1299, A549, HCC-827, and H661) in vitro and the highly aggressive H1299 xenograft in vivo were included in the study.

According to the tested assays, CuB significantly induced G2/M cell-cycle arrest and mitochondrial apoptosis.

Injection by the thiol antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in the experiment showed to attenuate all cellular effects of CuB completely.

Interestingly, pretreatment with glutathione synthesis inhibitor butithione-sulfoxime (BSO), significantly exacerbated CuB's cytotoxic effects against the tested cancer cells in both vitro and vivo.

Further analysis of the anti-NSCLC efficacy of CuB, researchers found that CuB induces cell death via rapidly and significantly decrease the levels of protein thiols and GSH/GSSG ratio by disrupting cellular redox balance induced cytotoxicity.

Dr. Kausar H, the lead scientist said, "CuB interacts with and modulates cellular thiols to mediate its anti-cancer effects. Collectively, our data shed new light on the working mechanisms of CuB and demonstrate its therapeutic potential against NSCLC".

Furthermore, CuB also exerted anti-NSCLC in vitro and vivo CuB by exhibiting a strong anti-migratory and anti-invasive ability against metastatic NSCLC at nanomolar concentrations.

In other words, CuB showed significant tumor angiogenesis-inhibitory effects by the inhibition of migratory, invasive and tube-forming capacities of human umbilical vein endothelial cells.

Moreover, in experimental EMT model CuB also suppressed the overexpression of protein associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the initiation of cellular change and Wnt/β-catenin signaling axis in stimulating the production of formation of new blood vessels to facilitate cancer proliferation.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of CuB may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tomato Inhibits the Onset and progression of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated in the liver over time, in the absence of excessive alcohol use.

The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world. However, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asian, the disease also was found in a large number of population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region.

According to the statistics, in the US, over 100 million people have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the condition is more double over the past 20 years. The disease also is the most prevalent liver disease in children.

Among the more affluent regions of China, the prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is approximately 15%. The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taking into account.

The exact causes of NAFLD aren't well understood. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications, genetic preposition, insulin resistance, high cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and type 2 diabetes are associated with the onset of the disease.

Recent studies also found that people with obstructive sleep apnea, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism(10) and underactive pituitary gland (hypopituitarism) also at an increased risk of the NALFD.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy diet such as high-fat diet may also have a strong implication on NAFLD(12)(13).

Dr. Jensen VS, the lead scientist in the study high-fat diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, wrote, "In humans and animal models, excessive intake of dietary fat, fructose, and cholesterol have been linked to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)"(13).

And, " Only HFr-fed rats developed dyslipidemia as characterized by higher levels of plasma triglycerides compared to all other groups (p < 0.0001). Hepatic dysfunction and inflammation was confirmed in HFD-fed rats by elevated levels of hepatic MCP-1 (p < 0.0001), TNF-alpha (p < 0.001) and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate (p < 0.0001), and in NASH-fed rats by elevated levels of hepatic MCP-1 (p < 0.01), increased hepatic macrophage infiltration (p < 0.001), and higher plasma levels of alanine aminotransferase (p < 0.0001) aspartate aminotransferase (p < 0.05), haptoglobin (p < 0.001) and TIMP-1 (p < 0.01) compared to Control"

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), researchers examined the effect of tomato juice consumption on high-fat diet-induced alterations in certain intestinal bacterial groups.

The study included a rat model with NAFLD induced by a high-fat diet that was randomly assigned to involving four experimental groups, including NA (standard diet and water), NL (standard diet and tomato juice), HA (high-fat diet and water) and HL (high-fat diet and tomato juice).

Rats with NAFLD were found to have an impaired gut microbiota profile observed by reducing the abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus and increasing Enterobacteriaceae.

Futhermore, according to the tested analysis, NAFLD rat also showed reduced concentrations of propionate, butyrate and phenolic catabolites and an increased acetate to propionate (Ac : Pr) ratio.

In other words, levels of antioxidant enzymes in the gut also decreased by the in NAFLD induced by high-fat diet rats compared to NA and HA.

Oral administration of tomato juice partially ameliorated high-fat diet-induced disturbances, particularly by increasing Lactobacillus abundance and diminishing the Ac : Pr ratio.

More precisely, tomato juice protected the gut microbiome composition against the alternation induced NAFLD.

Researchers after taking into account of co and confounders wrote, "(Tomato juice may be) a potential improvement of the metabolic pattern of NAFLD'.

Taken altogether, tomato may be considered a dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Improves the Inflammatory Response Against Renal Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immunomodulatory effect is a process in which the immune function is modulated to the needs of the body.

The immune system included the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.

The immune dysfunction can be classified into
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system.

* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune macrophages, the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound or injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase, depending on the size and penetration of the wound.

Most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is a pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.

However, if the immune system for whatever reason such as in people with a weakened immune system can not destroy the foreign invaders in the set period of time (3-8 weeks), it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

Low-grade inflammation over time has been found to destroy cells and tissues in the affected area or organ, inducing chronic inflammatory disease, including diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the modulation of the immune response, researchers examined the metformin and curcumin alone or in combination on nephrotoxicity induced by GM.

According to the tested differentiation,
* Both metformin and curcumin, when used alone, were effectively decreasing GM-induced nephrotoxicity.

* Both drug combination exerted a synergistic effect in ameliorating a GM-induced kidney injury, by expressively improved renal dysfunction.

* Moreover, in a GM treated animal model, metformin and curcumin showed strong protection against oxidative stress by decreasing the activities and expression of various oxidative enzymes.

* The combination also exerted a strong anti-inflammatory response by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in GM intoxicated group of animals.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " combinational treatment of metformin and curcumin might have a synergizing effect and substantial potential against nephrotoxicity".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for controlling the body's immune response, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry Protects the Bladder Against Radiation Cystitis in Prostate Cancer Patients

By Kyle J. Norton

Cystitis is a medical condition associated with inflammation of the bladder, leading to the symptoms of bladder irritation and swelling. Women are prone to the condition compared to men.

Most common cause of the bladder cystitis is a bacterial infection involved in a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, radiotherapy, long-term use of certain medicines and hygiene products have also been found to induce bladder inflammation.

Most common symptoms of cystitis are frequent urge to urinate, urge to urinate after you’ve emptied your bladder, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pain during sexual intercourse and sensations of pressure or bladder fullness.

In serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms of fever, blood in your urine and cramping in your abdomen or back.

The prostate warped around the around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder that makes some of the semen to carry sperm.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by abnormal cell growth in the tissue of the prostate. The low-growing prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

Conventionally, antibiotics are effective for the treatment of cystitis if the bacteria that cause the infection has been identified.

Most cases of acute cystitis are treated by nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) accompanied by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce pain and inflammation.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostate diseases, researchers examined the effect of highly standardized cranberry capsules (containing 72 mg proanthocyanidins [PACS]) compared with that of placebo capsules on the incidence and severity of radiation cystitis.

The double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled study included 41 men with prostate cancer who took one capsule a day at breakfast during treatment for 2 weeks.

According to the tested analysis,
* Cranberry capsules (65%) group showed the reduced incidence of cystitis compared with those that took placebo capsules.

* The severe cystitis was reduced to 30% of men in the cranberry group compared to 45% in the placebo.

* Furthermore, cranberry capsules group also significantly reduced symptoms of pain/burning.

* Additionally, the cranberry capsules group also showed a stronger urine stream and a decrease of the used significantly fewer pads/liners, compared to placebo.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Men receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer may benefit from using cranberry capsules, particularly those on low hydration regimens or with baseline urinary symptoms".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cystitis.in prostate cancer patients, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Ameliorates Endometrial Pain

By Kyle J. Norton

Endometriosis is a medical condition caused by the tissue of the endometrium that grows outside the uterus, leading to severe abnormal pain.

Most cases of endometriosis are found to involve the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis.

Some researchers suggested the cause of endometriosis is a result of a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, instead, some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body in the last stage menstrual cycle (menstruation).

Endometriosis also reacts to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building up tissue, breaking it and eliminating, according to the stage of the menstrual period. Since they grow in somewhere other than in the uterus when they break, the period blood has no way to exit, causing blood attaching to the organs or lining of the abdomen, resulting in scars or adhesion as well as weakening the normal function of organs.

According to statistics, endometriosis affects
a) About 20% of reproductive age women with endometriosis present but without symptoms.

b) About 55% of women who have developed the new onset of severe menstrual cramps.

c) About 25% of women with sub-fertility (less fertile than a normal couple)

Endometriosis can vary in appearance. It may be clear or white, reddish, brown or blue-black, and cysts. The condition can be classified according to the stage of severity:
* Minimal stage:
The top surface, few in number. Commonly they are found in the inside wall of uterus, ligaments, and ovary.

* Mild stage:
Deeper implants, greater numbers are presented. Commonly found in the same area as a minimal stage.

* Moderate stage:
Many implants, endometrial cysts present, affecting ovary function, causing scar tissues and adhesion is also present.

* Severe stage:
Intensive peritoneal implants, large endometromas present and dense adhesion.
Each woman experiences differently to endometriosis. Some women may have extensive endometrial tissues in their body but feel little or no pain, while other women may only be in the early stage of endometriosis but have excessive pain.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of endometriosis-associated pelvic pain, researchers evaluated the antioxidant activity of a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain.

The multicenter, open-label, non-comparative clinical trial included a sample of 398 patients with a mean age of 34.6 ± 7.2 years with endometriosis-associated pelvic pain.

According to the results of a combination of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid and bromelain treatment after 6 months, in comparison of 92.7% of the patients with pain intensity > 4 on the visual analogue scale (VAS) at the baseline, the percentage was decreased to 87.2% (p = 0.074) at 3 months of treatment.

Also compared to the baseline, the percentage decreased even more at 82.7% (p < 0.05) at the 6 months treatment.

More importantly, the use of medicine for pain relief also was also reduced upon on the application of the combination, according to the results of the experiment.

Dr. Lete I, the lead scientist said at the final report, "Women with endometriosis who wish to become pregnant and are treated with a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid and bromelain experienced a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain and required lower intake of rescue analgesics".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of endometrial pain, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Peas (Pisum Sativum) Improves the Digestive Functioning in Flavor of Good Bacteria

By Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder plays a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking out down food after food intake through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Indigestion, on the other hand, is symptoms of another digestive disease, including GERD. Most cases of indigestion not caused by underlying diseases can be resolved quickly.

People with indigestion experience symptoms differently. Some may feel the symptoms of occasionally while others may feel often and daily.

There are a number of risk factor associated with digestive disorders including bacterial and/or viral infection, inflammation, lactase deficiency, anti-inflammatory drugs and certain conditions such as ruptured or perforated organs, muscle dysfunction, gallstones.

However, some researchers suggested that there is a strong correlation between the risk of digestive disorders in obese patients.

Dr. Su Youn Nam, in the investigation of obesity-related digestive diseases, wrote, "Obesity-related digestive diseases include gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal cancer, colon polyp and cancer, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis C-related disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, gallstone, cholangiocarcinoma, and pancreatic cancer".

And, "Although obesity-related esophageal diseases are associated with altered mechanical and humoral factors, other obesity-related digestive diseases seem to be associated with obesity-induced altered circulating levels of adipocytokines and insulin resistance".

The findings strongly indicated the risk of digestive disorder in obese is substantially higher compared to healthy weight individuals.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of digestive diseases, researchers investigated the effects of soybean meal (SBM) substitution by a mixture of rapeseed meal (RSM), white lupine seeds (WLS) and pea seeds (PS) on gastrointestinal function in Hyplus rabbits.

Selected Hyplus rabbits were fed by either control diet (SBM15) containing 15% SBM, or diet SBM7.5 containing 7.5% SBM, 5% RSM, 4% WLS and 3% PS. In diet SBM0 or diet SBM0, SBM completely was replaced by RSM, WLS and PS (10%, 8%, and 6%, respectively).

Based on the tested analysis, the experimental diets did not cause significant differences in performance parameters evaluated in vivo and post-mortem, and in the nutrient and energy digestibility of nitrogen retention.

However, the change of enzymatic activity of large gut microbiota in flavors of the good bacteria was found to have a similar effect in the comparison of diet SBM and the mixture of RSM, WLS, and PS.

In other words,  pea seeds (PS) used a combination with rapeseed meal (RSM) and lupine seeds (WLS)  processes a significant effect in balancing the levels of microbiota in the promotion of digestive functioning.

Taken altogether, green peas used alone or combined with other healthy food may be considered a  remedy for the promotion of gastrointestinal health,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
