Herbal Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Hyperglycemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. The condition also is a hallmark of diabetes.  Another hallmark is insulin resistance.

Postprandial blood glucose is the levels taken after 2 hours of a meal, generally at the approximate peak value in patients with diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia are the results of poor diet and glucose management in patients with diabetes. However, missing insulin injection and improper use of insulin injection are also found in some patients.

Management of postprandial blood glucose has become an important feature for diabetics against the risk of microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Diabetes is a medical and chronic disease characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose as a result of the cells in pancreas died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst, headache, frequent peeing, fatigue with blood sugar more than 180 mg/dL.

Depending on the blood glucose levels, some patient may also experience symptoms of trouble concentrating, blurred vision and weight loss.

However, some researchers suggested that poor diet with high saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods is one of the major and preventable risk factors associated with the onset of the condition in the Western world compared to a traditional diet.

Dr. David Hefner in the concern of the risk of diabetes in patients who are fans of the Western diet wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes" and "That's what researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have found and reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine."

The doctor continued, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for lowering blood glucose, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin, antihyperglycemic activity.

By searching the medical database in PubMed from 1998 to 2013, associated with the role of curcumin in the development and progression of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, researchers found that
* Curcumin inhibited the uptakes of blood glucose level by reducing the liver glucose production and suppressing abnormally high blood sugar-induced inflammatory state.

Furthermore, stimulation of glucose uptake associated hyperglycemia caused by overexpression of GLUT4, GLUT2 and GLUT3 genes that facilitate glucose movement across cell membranes was also attenuated by curcumin.

Activation of AMP kinase and promotion of PPAR ligand-binding activity involved in stimulated glucose uptake and lipid oxidation were also reduced by the administration of the bioactive compound.

Additionally, curcumin also inhibited the expression hyperglycemia by modulating the insulin secretion from pancreatic tissues, improving pancreatic cell function, thus reducing the risk of insulin resistance.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Curcumin has antihyperglycemic and insulin sensitizer effects. Thereby, more studies evaluating the effects of curcumin on hyperglycemic state and insulin resistance in related disorders such as diabetes are recommended".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betacyanins Protects the Bladder Cell Integrity Against DNA Alternation

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cells growth in the tissue of the specific organ in the body.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue of an organ. After penetrating into deeper layers and colonizing the entire organ, the cancerous cells can spread to healthy tissue of other organs through lymph and blood.

The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.

Bladder cancer occurs when cells mass in the inner lining of the bladder forms a malignant growth or tumor. Bladder cancer developed in the bladder lining has also been found to spread through the bladder wall to nearby organs such as the prostate gland in men or the uterus in women.

Bladder cancer can be classified depending on its proliferation
* Superficial types of bladder cancer
The most recurrent type of bladder cancers has a characteristic by noninvasive. These types of bladder cancer can be controlled or removed by regular cystoscopy.

* Invasive types of bladder cancer
Invasive types of bladder cancer tend to spread after beginning in cells in the lining of the bladder. These types of cancer often require surgery by removing part or the whole bladder.

The exact causes of bladder cancer are not identified. However, smoking has been found to induce a substantial risk of bladder cancer incidence.

Dr. Neal D Freedman, the lead scientist wrote, "...the population attributable risk of bladder cancer for tobacco smoking is 50–65% in men and 20–30% in women and that current cigarette smoking triples bladder cancer risk relative to never smoking".

And, "Compared to a pooled estimate of US data from cohorts initiated between 1963 and 1987, relative risks for smoking in the more recent NIH-AARP cohort were higher, with population attributable risks for women compared to those for men".

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined Betacyanins (BC) purified from beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra L.) tested, alone or in combination with vitexin-2-O-xyloside (XVX) from Beta vulgaris var. cicla L. in the proliferation rate in T24 bladder cancer cells.

According to the tested analysis,
* Combination of BC and XVX exhibited a synergistic effect that inhibits proliferation in T24 cancer cells at 24 and 48 h but not after 72 h of incubation.

* The combination induced apoptosis of T24 bladder cancer cells observed by means of fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis by increasing the expression in caspases associated with cell death programming.

The inhibition of bladder cancer cell line was found to enhance the expression levels of the pro-apoptotic gene and inhibit anti-apoptotic and survival proteins.

Extrinsically, administration of BC increase of the activity of caspase 8, a protein associated with the induction of apoptosis.

Interestingly, the XVX, BC, and their combination induced cancer cell death without exhibiting a cytotoxic effect on normal and healthy human cells.

Based on the findings, Dr. Scarpa ES, the lead scientist said, "the efficacy and the mechanisms of the action of BC and XVX, extracted from edible plants, and suggested that a diet or a nutrition supplement, enriched with these bioactive molecules, could be used in the prevention of human bladder cancer".

Taken altogether, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Whole Food Cucumber Inhibits All Parameters Associated with Insulin Resistance In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin Resistance, a hallmark in patients with type II diabetes is the condition in which the cells in tissues that start to resist or ignore the signal of the hormone insulin.

In other words, the insulin produced by the body no longer can convert glucose to energy even with the presence of the hormone insulin, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately, 1 in 3 people in the United States have prediabetes, including half of those age 60 and older.

People with insulin resistance has been found to increase the risk for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Although researchers do not know the exact cause of insulin resistance, they do not certain risk factors such as genetic preposition, aging, and ethnicity are associated with the onset of the condition.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle that causes excess body weight, too much belly fat, smoking and lack of exercise are the most prevalent factors in the Western world.

Dr. Martin O. Weickert wrote, "Insulin resistance has been proposed as the strongest single predictor for the development of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). Chronic oversupply of energy from food, together with inadequate physical activity, has been recognized as the most relevant factors leading to overweight, abdominal adiposity, insulin resistance, and finally T2DM".

And, "Conversely, energy-reduced diets almost invariably to facilitate weight loss and reduce abdominal fat mass and insulin resistance. However, sustained weight loss is generally difficult to achieve, and distinct metabolic characteristics in patients with T2DM further compromise success".

The findings strongly suggested that by maintaining a healthy lifestyle including a healthy diet and moderate exercise, insulin resistance is preventable.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of insulin resistance, researchers investigated the effect of the effects of Cucumis melo L. (Cucumis) on obesity-induced insulin resistance (IR) in genetically leptin-deficient Lepob/Lepob mice.

According to the results of the tested assays, Cucumis showed significant activity in the improvement of IR in obese mice and inhibition of inflammation in adipose tissue and blood.

The efficacy of Cucumis against insulin resistance of the tested mice was also attributed to the enhancement of the ratio of gut microbiota in the gut associated with improvement of insulin sensitivity.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, " administration of Cucumis improved IR by reducing inflammation, thereby changing the gut microbiota composition. Cucumis is thus a promising treatment for obesity-induced insulin resistance and the inflammatory state".

The Lund University in the study of glycemic and insulinemic responses to fermentation products suggested that adding pickled cucumber to breakfast with a high-glycemic index bread significantly lowered postprandial glycemia and insulinemia compared to no metabolic response of regular milk and fresh cucumber.

In other words, fermentation products such a prickle play an essential role in reducing the risk of insulin resistance.

Herbal Bilberry, The Natural Anti Inflammatory Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural process to protect our body against foreign stimuli or pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system first line of defense responds to the bodily injury by stimulating the blood palette to the cover the site of damage and production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off the pathogens which attempt to enter the body through the wound.

Overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can also cause serious damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

Most cases of infection were stopped at the acute phase of infection with 3 to 8 weeks. However, people with a weakened immune system, the acute infection may continue and progress to chronic inflammatory disease.

Some researchers suggested the immune system has evolved to protect our body by killing off all the foreign invasion within a set period of time, otherwise, it will adapt to the new change, leading to low-grade inflammation.

Low-grade inflammation is a chronic production, but a low-grade state, of inflammatory factors that have been found in a number of chronic diseases such as obesity and chronic pain.

Dr. Rosa Casas, the lead scientist in the examination of diet effects in chronic inflammatory disease wrote, "Unhealthy diets that include high intake of red and processed meat, sweets and desserts, potatoes, French fries, and refined grains) is associated with high plasma inflammatory biomarkers and a greater risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), cancer and other chronic diseases".

And, "On the other hand, prudent dietary patterns such as Mediterranean diet as well as intake of fruit, vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, walnuts, legumes, whole grains, fish, cocoa, coffee, tea and wine is associated with a reduced plasma inflammatory biomarkers and a lower risk of CVD, T2D and other chronic disease".

The findings strongly suggested the risk of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases can be reduced by following a healthy diet.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the course of finding natural ingredients for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activity of anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract used as a supplement for ocular health worldwide.

The study included a mouse model of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) compared to those of injecting lipopolysaccharide to show retinal inflammation.

According to the results of a tested assay, anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract pretreatment prevented the impairment of photoreceptor cell function that had been suppressed by injection of endotoxin and lipopolysaccharide by restoring the decreased and the shortening of outer segments of the infected cells.

Furthermore, the extract inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines and rhodopsin decrease causes by endotoxin and lipopolysaccharide in the activation of a protein (STAT 3) associated with the regulation of cellular functions.

Moreover, by examining the inflammatory assay, the anti-inflammatory effect of anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract was attributed to the inhibition of the expression of free radical and activation of NF-κB, a redox-sensitive transcription factor, in the inflamed retina.

The results strongly suggested that anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract has a protective effect on visual function against retinal inflammation.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information of bilberry antiinflammatory activity, researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of bilberry extract (BE, containing 42.04% anthocyanin) on Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) plus lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced liver injury and croton oil-induced ear edema in mice.

Injection of BE exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of croton oil-induced ear edema and liver inflammation provoked by P. acnes plus LPS observed by decreased levels of oxidative stress markers such as the plasma alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase with no side effects.

The levels of liver mRNA levels in the expression of proteins involved the production of inflammatory cytokines elevated by injection of croton oil and LPS were inhibited by the administration of BE.

Also, BE treatment reduced the liver oxidative stress caused by overexpression of malondialdehyde and NO contents significantly.

In other words, BE has a strong protective effect against acute and immunological inflammation.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Cabbage Processes the Best Anti Hyperlipidemic Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition caused by abnormally high lipid accumulation in the bloodstream, including high blood cholesterol and fat.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition in the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Cholesterol produced by the liver or dietary fat intake at a moderate amount plays an essential role to produce steroid hormone and vitamin D, build strong cell membranes and aid the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.

However, overexpression of cholesterol in the blood has been found to induce the forming arterial plaques, leading to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

There are 2 types of blood cholesterol
* The high-density lipoprotein is also known as "good cholesterol"  that return cholesterol to the liver for future use

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in moderate amount.

The healthy ratio of total blood cholesterol ("bad"/ "good") is any numbers that are less than 4.

Patients with hyperlipidemia are assymptomatic. However, over time hyperlipidemia can cause plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, leading to the narrowing arteries and hardening arterial walls in orchestrating the onset of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

Hyperlipidemia is treatable. By a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belong to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. It has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find a potent compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the hypolipidemic effects of the methanol extract of Brassica oleracea var. capitata (MEB, cabbage) in an animal model.

The study included 28 healthy white rabbits of either sex induced hyperlipidemia equally divided into four groups with treated and standard groups that were administered MEB (500 mg·kg(-1)) and glibenclamide (10 mg·kg(-1)), respectively for 15 and 30 days.

Additionally, the animals of the normal and diabetic controls also received normal saline 1 mL/day equivalent to the volume of doses given to the test and standard animals.

According to the tested assays
*  MEB also decreased in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein by 94.3 and 96.5 mg·dL(-1), respectively, and increased the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HLD) by 26.7 mg·dL(-1) compared to diabetic control.

* After taking other factors into account, researchers suggested that all of the changes in lipid profile were statistically significant.comapred to control.

These results strongly suggested that the methanol extract from collard greens processes a  hypolipidemic effect in a diabetes animal model.

Dr. Assad T, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest the potential of MEB as a...hypolipidemic agent".

Taken altogether, collard green may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene, the Best Anti-Inflammatory Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune systematics reaction that protects the body against invasive foreign microorganisms.

In the acute phase of infection,  the macrophage of the largest white blood cells of the first line of defense not only stimulates the production of blood platelets to the cover the site of damage but also induces production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to fend off foreign invaders.

During the acute phase of infection, depending on the individual immune system capacity, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may cause damage to nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars in some people.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase of infection. The wound is slowly healed itself within a few days or weeks.

However, if the immune system can not destroy all pathogens within a set of period time ( 3 to 8 weeks) it will compromise, leading to chronic inflammation.

In other words, chronic inflammation occurs when the immune response lingers, causing low-grade inflammation. Chronic inflammation over time may damage proteins, lipids, and cell of the body tissues.

The infection may be latent in which the pathogen remains within the body for a long time without producing any symptoms, such as the hepatitis virus.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation include cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

Anti-inflammation is a treatment that not reduces inflammation or swelling but also protects the damaged tissue against the formation of scar without affecting the immune function in killing the foreign invaders.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find potential ingredients with anti-inflammatory property, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on reducing inflammation induced by cigarette smoke (CS).

In vivo, according to the study of 40 mice divided into 5 groups: a control exposed to ambient air (CG), a vehicle-control group that received 200 μl of sunflower oil by orogastric gavage, a group exposed to CS and two groups administered lycopene (diluted in sunflower oil) at doses of either 25 or 50 mg/kg/day prior to exposure to CS (LY25+CS and LY50+CS) for 5 days,
* There was an increase of ROS production in 24 h in CS compared with CG.

* Lycopene administrated at concentrations of 1 μM and 2 μM were able to reduce the production of ROS in 24 h compared with CS.

* Administration with lycopene at the highest dose suppressed the CS-induced increase of leukocytes.

* Lipid peroxidation and DNA damage increased in the CS group compared with that in the controls was also suppressed by lycopene at the highest dose.

* Futhermore, the decrease of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in the CS group compared with that in the controls were also reduced in LY25+CS and LY50+CS groups.

* Lycopene also inhibited the expression of proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, and interleukin-10 after exposure to CS.

In vitro, observation of the results of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated SW 480 human colorectal cancer cells found that
* Lycopene at a dose-dependent manner decreased the expression of mRNA associated with protein in the initiation of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines similar to that of the aforementioned study.

* Lycopene also inhibited the concentrations of mediators prostaglandins -2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO) associated with the onset of inflammation.

* Additionally, lycopene blocks the activation of nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) and Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) which cause inflammation.

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention inflammation, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli and Tomato Inhibits Elevated Hormone Resistin Associated with Insulin Resistance

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes characterized by the inability of the body to use the insulin produced by the pancreas properly.

In other words, signals sent out by the hormone insulin caused by clog-up of the insulin receptors was ignored by the cell of the muscles, body fat, and liver that process the function to convert glucose into energy.

More precisely, as the clogged up insulin receptors that ignore the signals of the hormone insulin, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the beta cells and over time causing permanent damage to the cells in the pancreas.

Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

A 2016 joint study led by the MSA University, suggested that tomato and broccoli extract effects on glucose homeostasis in high fat diet-induced obesity in rats by regulating the adipocyte hormone Resistin.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomato is grown worldwide for commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

According to the US statistics, approximately, 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance with 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk of insulin resistance.

Believe it or not, the most common risk factors associated with insulin resistance are obesity and hypertension associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist wrote, " Contrary to expectation, IR was induced in mice fed the Western diet,,,. The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".

A total of 48 male albino rats included in the study were divided into 8 groups as follows: control, HFD, stop fat diet (SD), Tomato 200 mg/kg (T200), Tomato 400 mg/kg (T400), Broccoli 200 mg/kg (B200), Broccoli 400 mg/kg (B400), and Chromax (CX).

According to the tested differentiation after 1 month of treatment,
* Serum levels of resistin were significantly reduced in all groups treated with tomato, broccoli, and CXIn other words, T 200, T 400, B 200, B 400 and CX groups reduced levels of resistin to: 4.13 ± 0.22 ng/ml, 1.51 ± 0.04 ng/ml, 4.13 ± 0.22 ng/ml, 2.32 ± 0.15 ng/ml and 1.37 ± 0.03 ng/ml, compared to the baseline, respectively.

Where resistin is an adipocyte hormone associated with regulating glucose metabolism. Elevated levels of resistin have been found to cause insulin resistance in diabetics.

Increased levels of Serum levels of leptin were significantly reduced anti-elevated levels of resistin in the T 400 group compared to the B 400 and CX groups.

Additionally, serum levels of adiponectin associated with the insulin resistance were significantly increased in the T 400 group (131 ± 3.84 pg/ml).

The results strongly suggested that broccoli and tomato extract inhibited the elevated levels of hormone resistin that cause insulin resistance in the high-fat-diet-induced diabetes animal model.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " tomato and broccoli extract treatment regulates glucose homeostasis via reduction of serum resistin and may be a useful non-pharmacological therapy for obesity".

Taken altogether, broccoli and tomato extract may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
