Whole Food Onion Kills Renal Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidney is an essential organ that not only filters out blood but also regulates electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin,

Formed part of the urinary system, kidney filters blood with billions of glomeruli by separating the cells of blood from plasma. During the process, some necessary substances are reabsorbed back into the blood, while others wastes, such as urea and ammonium are stored into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder.

Kidney cancer is a medical condition caused by malignant cells of the lining of the tubules in the kidney.

At the advanced stage, cancer kidney cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ through the circulation of blood and fluid, leading to secondary metastasis.

Kidney cancer epidemiologically has been found to spread to the lung.

The exact causes of kidney cancer are not identified. However, the below prevalent factors have been found to induce a higher risk of the disease.
* Gender
Men are twice at risk to develop renal cell carcinoma than women.

* Aging
The onset of renal cell carcinoma has a peak incidence in the 50 but today, the disease has a tendency to affect the younger age population.

* Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of renal cell carcinoma.

* Obesity
Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer among women, and increased BMI is equally strongly associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer among men and women.

*  Family history
If one of your direct family members has it, your risk of developing renal cell carcinoma increases.

* Chemical toxins
Exposure to certain environment chemical toxins may increase the risk of renal cell carcinoma.

* Cystic kidney disease
This type of genetic disorder of the kidneys accompanied by a renal deficiency can increase the risk of developing kidney cancer.

Because of less nervous in the kidney and location, the early stage of renal cell carcinoma is very hard to detect. In some case, the tumor can grow without causing any pain and discomfort. Most common symptoms are abdominal pain, back pain, blood in the urine, flank pain, anemia, varicocele enlargement, and hypertension.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of kidney cancer

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste, onion is found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of renal cancer, researchers examined the effects of fisetin, a natural compound found in fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, apples, cucumbers, and onions in human renal carcinoma (Caki) cells.

According to the tested assays, Fisetin induced cancer cell apoptosis by causing cell cycle arrest on the sub-G1 phase.

Futhermore, Fisetin also induced cancer cell apoptosis by activating the proteins (cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) associated with cell death programming.

Moreover, caspases, the major effectors of apoptosis were also activated by the injection of Fisetin.

Additionally, the efficacy of Fisetin in the inhibition of the renal cancer cell line was also attributed by inducing death receptor 5 (DR5) expression and promoting the gene expression of tumor suppressor (p53).

However, in the differentiation of the effect of another gene (CHOP expression) associated with cellular stress and involved in mediating apoptosis and expression of ROS cytotoxicity, researchers found that fisetin-induced apoptosis without the assistance of CHOP and ROS.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " fisetin induced apoptosis through p53 mediated up-regulation of DR5 expression at the transcriptional level"

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of renal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Carotenoids Ameliorates the Risk of Breast Cancer, According to Study

By Kyle J. Norton

Breast cancer or malignant breast neoplasm is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the breast.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

 In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of women is 1/8.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, accounting to over 24% of all cancers diagnosed every year.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer in the localized stage is about 100%.
 Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), is aggressive cancer occurred in women of any age that grows in sheets instead of lumps and invades nearby skin, leading to the whole breast which suddenly goes red and feels hot, resembling an inflammation

The rare condition was found in only 1-6% of all breast cancer cases in the USA.  Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) should be treated very promptly.
Most common symptoms of IBC are
* Rapid swelling (a cup size in a few days) sometimes

*  Skin changes (pink, red, or dark-colored areas)

* Nipple retraction

* Persistent itching, skin hot to touch

* Initially resembles mastitis

* Breast skin ulcers (later stage of IBC)

How danger is IBC? Dr. Ana M. Gonzalez-Angulo, the lead scientist wrote, " (According to the results of the study), the median follow-up was 5.8 years (range, 0.3–23.8 years). There were 238 recurrences and 236 deaths (compared to 398 patients with IBC were treated between 1974 and 2005). The median recurrence-free survival (RFS) duration was 2.3 years and the median overall survival (OS) time was 4.2 years".

Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the protective role of carotenoids against the onset of breast cancer.

The study included a total of 521 women with breast cancer and age-matched controls (5-year interval) selected from three teaching hospitals in Guangzhou, China.

According to the chemical analysis, phytochemicals α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and lutein/zeaxanthin are found in serum carotenoids,

* Serum α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin are associated inversely with the risk of breast cancer.

* The relative odds ratio for the highest quartile of serum concentration compared with the lowest quartile were 0·44.

* More precisely, the OR for α-carotene was.44, β-carotene was 0·27 and lycopene was .41 and lutein/zeaxanthin was 0·26.

* β-cryptoxanthin, one of the major compounds was not significant association with the risk for breast cancer.

Based on the stratified analysis, researchers found that serum α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene and lutein/zeaxanthin were also inversely associated with breast cancer risk among premenopausal women and among all subtypes of ER or PR status.

The results strongly suggested that all chemical compounds in the class of carotenoids work synergistically to decrease the risk of cancer among women.

Dr. Yan B, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account said, "The results suggest a protective role of α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein/zeaxanthin, but not β-cryptoxanthin, in breast cancer risk.".

Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betacyanins, the Best Chemo-Drugs Enhancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Chemo-drugs are a class of conventional medicine used for the treatment of cancers. including 5-fluorouracil, 6-mercaptopurine, cytarabine, gemcitabine, and methotrexate.

Compared to other treatments, chemotherapy targets cancer's specific genes, proteins, or the tissue environment that contributes to cancer growth and survival.

Chemo drugs have been found to improve the survival rate of cancer patients. However, they also induce significant side effects.

Most common side effects of chemo-drugs are fatigue, hair loss, easy bruising, and bleeding. infection, anemia (low red blood cell counts) nausea and vomiting, appetite changes and constipation.

The side effects of chemo drugs are the results of damage to the healthy blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, hair follicles, and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system.

According to the American Cancer Society, some chemo drugs have also been found to damage cells in the heart, kidneys, bladder, lungs, and nervous system.

Therefore, for patients who are at a higher risk of severe symptoms, medicines are taken with the chemo. Sometimes they are the must to help protect your body’s normal cells.

Conventionally,  most chemo drugs side effects go away fairly quickly, but some may take months or even years for the symptoms to go away completely.

However, chemo-drugs that cause long-term damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, or reproductive organs are irreversible.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belongings to the group of betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a chemical compound that enhances the chemo drug efficacy and reduces the chemotoxicity, researchers examined the extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA approved red food color E162, in the development of multi-organ tumors in experimental animals.

By comparing the cytotoxic effect of the red beetroot extract with an anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) in the androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and in the well-established estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), researchers found that
* Both doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect in both PC-3 and MCF-7cancer cell lines.

* Doxorubicin, at the concentration of 29 µg/m., completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days.

* Although the cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin, the extract continued to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) at the same concentration.

In other words, both beetroot extract and Doxorubicin exerted a significant cytotoxic activity against the tested cancer cell line. However, the efficacy of beetroot extract is lower compared to those of Doxorubicin.

According to the chemical analysis, betacyanin was found to play an important role in the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract.

Moreover, betaxanthins and betacyanins used in combination with conventional anticancer drugs were found to reduce the chemo drug toxicity and overcome the multidrug resistance of cancer cells.

Based on the finding, researchers concluded betacyanins used alone or combined with other phytochemicals or chemo drug to block the onset of the proliferation of tumor cells.

Taken altogether, betacyanins found in beetroot extract used alone or combined with conventional anti-cancer medicine to enhance the chemo-drugs efficacy and reduce chemotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Reduces the Risk of Diabetic Nephropathy in Diabetes, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease) is a complication of kidney damage caused by diabetes.

Long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia can damage the part of the kidneys thus reducing the kidney function in filter waste from the blood filters, leading to 'leaky' syndrome that allows protein into your urine.

Diabetic nephropathy is the 3 stage of kidney change in patients with diabetes. In this stage, patients may experience symptoms of abnormally elevated urinary albumin excretion, compared to the 15 and 300 μg/min in the baseline situation.

The progression of diabetic nephropathy that leads to an increased rate in albumin excretion is higher in patients with increased blood pressure.

More importantly, if high blood pressure is left untreated, diabetic nephropathy can induce persistent proteinuria >0.5 g/ 24 h that furtherly decline the renal function with the mean fall rate being around 1 ml/min/mo.

In other words, by treating hypertension and hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes, the progression of diabetics kidney disease may be slowed or preventable.

Some researchers suggested that
* By maintaining a healthy blood glucose levels and keeping them within the target range.

* By a change of healthful diet.

* By getting moderate and regular exercise

* By maintaining a healthy weight

* Particularly, by following a treatment plan, including the use of insulin or other medications.

Most common symptoms of diabetic nephropathy are worsening blood pressure control, protein in the urine, swelling of feet, ankles, hands or eyes, frequent urination, confusion or difficulty concentrating.

If you are diabetes associated with the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential and natural source for the treatment of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effects of bioactive compound curcumin anti-diabetic nephropathy (DN), the most common cause of end-stage renal disease in most parts of the world.

40 patients in the Diabetes Clinic of the Outpatient Department of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences on with overt type 2 diabetic nephropathy were randomized into a trial group (n = 20) and a control group (n = 20).

The treatment group received one capsule with each meal containing 500 mg turmeric, of which 22.1 mg was the active ingredient curcumin (three capsules daily) compared to the control group received three capsules identical in color and size containing starch for the period of 2 months.

Compared to the control group. patients treated with turmeric showed significantly reduced serum levels of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and IL-8 associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine and urinary protein excretion, the indications of kidney dysfunction.

The same results were also found in the comparison of the pre- and post-turmeric supplementation values.

Furthermore, there is no side effect reported in patients of the treatment group.

In other words, turmeric containing curcumin used in the experiment protects the kidney cells against the onset of diabetic nephropathy without inducing any adverse effects.

Dr. Khajehdehi P, the lead scientist based on the finding wrote, "Short-term turmeric supplementation can attenuate proteinuria, TGF-β, and IL-8 in patients with overt type 2 diabetic nephropathy and can be administered as safe adjuvant therapy for these patients".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic nephropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Tomato Promotes Immunomodulatory Activity Against the Onset of Colitis In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is chronic a condition associated with the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Colitis can be classified into the microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis and Behcet's colitis(a), according to the  Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.

Most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the types. However, the general symptoms include
* Adnominal pain and diarrhea
There is a report of a 25-year-old Iranian gentleman was admitted to hospital with severe bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain as a result of herbal-induced weight loss adverse effects. On flexible sigmoidoscopy, a continuous length of congested mucosa with multiple small ulcers was seen extending up to the mid-transverse colon, in keeping with ulcerative colitis, according to the study by
Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust(1)

2. Bleeding per rectum
Acute ischaemic colitis (AIC) is being increasingly recognized as an uncommon cause of abdominal pain associated with fresh bleeding per rectum and diarrhea, according to the study by University Central Hospital(2).

3. Distention with bloody diarrhea
The typical clinical presentation is acute sudden abdominal pain and distention with bloody diarrhea(3).

4. Abdominal bloating and flatulence
In the study to estimate the prevalence of microscopic colitis and SIBO in patients with IBS, to evaluate the symptoms and the efficacy of treatment found that out of the 132 patients initially diagnosed with IBS 3% (n=4) had microscopic colitis and 43.9% (n=58) had SIBO. Diarrhea was the main symptom in patients with microscopic colitis and SIBO (p=0.041), while abdominal pain, abdominal bloating and flatulence were prominent in IBS patients (p=0.042; p=0.039; p=0.048)(4).

5. Changes in bowel habits
Abdominal pain, bloating, early satiety, and changes in bowel habits are common presenting symptoms in individuals with functional GI disorders(5).

6. Fever and severe dehydration
There is a report of a 19-year-old man with a 1-year history of ulcerative colitis presented with fever, bloody diarrhea, and severe dehydration. He was on po.48 mg methylprednisolone and 3 g mesalazine daily and has recently finished taking clarithromycin for Campylobacter jejuni infection(6).

7. Urgency
The study to examine the differing perspectives and perceptual gaps relating to ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms and their management between patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs), indicated that fifty-five percent of patients stated that UC symptoms over the past year had affected their quality of life, while physicians and nurses estimated that 35% to 37% of patients would have a reduced quality of life over the same period. Patients ranked urgency and pain as the most bothersome symptoms(7)

8. Other symptoms
There is a report of a case of a 51-year-old Caucasian male who was evaluated for abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, severe peripheral arthralgias, and chronic watery diarrhea as a result of granulomatous enterocolitis. due to Sarcoidosis(8). Other study conducted by Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with rats in the model group, showed lethargy, poor appetite, loss of energy, diarrhea and bloody stool(9).

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms persistently with no signs of stopping, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colitis.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding healthy foods for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined the impact of tomato lycopene extract (TLE) on intestinal inflammation.

The study included mice lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced innate signaling and experimental colitis fed a diet containing 0.5 and 2% TLE or isoflavone free control (AIN-76).

According to the tested assays, TLE blocked LPS-induced IkappaBalpha degradation and RelA translocation associated with the onset of colitis by blocking the inhibition of the protein involved in cytokine production.

Futhermore, MIP-2, a small cytokine mRNA accumulation in IEC-18 cells and pro-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin 12 (IL-12) induced by LPS were inhibited by the injection of TLE.

Moreover, application of TLE also increased the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-alpha, a regulator of inflammation and MCP-1 mRNA associated with macrophage recruitment in the colon of TLE-fed subjects.

The results strongly suggested that tomato extract inhibited the colitis in mice through its modulatory of immune and inflammatory activity.

Taken altogether, tomato may be considered a dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects The Blood Cell Against Acute Monocytic Leukemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending to the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extreme immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death to normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

Acute monocytic leukemia (AML-M5) is one of the most common types of AML in young children < 2 years.

According to the statistics, acute monocytic leukemia comprises 3 - 6% of cases of AML with the male to female ratio is 1.8 to 1.0.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of acute monocytic leukemia AML M5, one of the most common types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in children researchers examined the potency of the extracts from lesser galangal, turmeric, and ginger against AML M5.

The aqueous and organic solvent extracts from the leaves and rhizomes of lesser galangal and turmeric, and from the rhizomes of ginger showed significantly antiproliferative activities against THP-1 AMoL cells in vitro examined by the reduced numbers of the positive cells.

Compared to the lesser galangal leaf extracts in organic solvents of methanol, chloroform, and dichloromethane, turmeric leaf and rhizome extracts and ginger rhizome extracts in methanol showed distinctive anticancer activities.

The analyzing the chemical compound of the lesser galangal leaf methanol extract found 18 fractions using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with the fractions 9 and 16, respectively, showed the greatest antiproliferative activities.

Based on the results, researchers wrote in the final report, "plant extracts might be a safer approach to finding a lasting cure for AMoL".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acute monocytic leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Lycopene Protects the Prostate Gland Against Prostate Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused the growth of the cells irregularly in the tissue of the prostate.

Prostate gland wrapped around the around a tube (the urethra), is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder with a function which produces some of the semen that carries sperm.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among Canadian men and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada.

In 2017, approximately 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, accounting of 21% of all new cancer cases in men.

Futhermore, approximately 1 in 7 Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and 1 in 29 will die from it.

Most common symptoms of prostate cancer are
* Frequent urination
Patients urinate much time than usual for over periods of 1 year or 2, as a result of enlarged tumors that press against the bladder.

* Urgency
A desire to pass urinate more urgency as a result of the enlarged tumor pressing against the bladder.

* Dribbling after finished passing urine, urine continues to dribbles as a result of the enlarged prostate tumor.

* Hesitancy
Having to wait a long time for the urine stream to start as a result of cancer has narrowed the urethra.

* Blood in the urine
Prostate cancer may have damaged any part of the urinary tract.

* Painful urination and ejaculation
As cancer has grown large, it interferes with the function of the urethra

* Blood in the semen
As cancer has grown large enough to damage inside the walls of the urethra.

* Lower back pain
As a result of the enlarged prostate tumor has pressed on spinal nerves.

* New-onset erectile dysfunction (impotence)
Prostate cancer has interfered with blood vessels, responding to the erection.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms persistently, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The 5 years of prostate cancer diagnosed at the localized stage are 100%.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the treatment of prostate cancer(PCa), researchers investigated the association between prostate cancer and lycopene.

According to 42 studies were included in the analysis including included 43 851 cases of PCa reported from 692 012 participants after searching the eligible studies published before 1 December 2016 and identified from PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library, both dietary intake and circulating concentrations of lycopene were significantly associated with reduced PCa risk.

Furthermore, lycopene showed a significant linearly dose-response in reduced risk of prostate cancer. In other words, for an additional 2 mg of lycopene consumed, the risk of prostate cancer is reduced by 1%.

Compared to dietary lycopene, an additional 10 μgdl-1 of circulating lycopene in the blood of the linear and nonlinear models decreased the PCa risk by 3.5 to 3.6%.

Observation of lycopene effect in advanced PCa, the secondary metabolite also demonstrated a trend for protection against PCa aggressiveness.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote," Our data demonstrate that higher dietary and circulating lycopene concentrations are inversely associated with PCa risk. This was accompanied by dose-response relationships for dietary and circulating lycopene".

According to another meta-analysis conducted by the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in the searching, eligible studies published in English up to April 10, 2014,  from Pubmed, ScienceDirect Online, Wiley online library databases, and hand searching,
* Higher lycopene consumption significantly lowered PCa risk.

* Higher lycopene consumption was linearly associated with a reduced risk of PCa and higher circulating lycopene levels significantly reduced the risk of PCa.

* However, the concentration of circulating lycopene between 2.17 and 85 μg/dL was linearly inversed with PCa risk compared to no linear association of any doses that are >85 μg/dL.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "our novel data demonstrated that higher lycopene consumption/circulating concentration is associated with a lower risk of PCa".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
