Phytochemical Alliin, the Best Anti Metabolic Syndrome Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

In other words, if you process 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, most people with metabolic syndrome have never developed
CVD and diabetes.

Other than high blood glucose, induced thirst and urination, fatigue, and blurred vision, most patients with other metabolic conditions are asymptomatic.

Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, obesity, medical condition such as diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome are most risk factors found in patients with the syndrome.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet in the US over the past few decades may have a strong effect in inducing the widespread metabolic syndrome.

Dr. Drake I, the lead scientist wrote, "The 'Western' dietary pattern was inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol and positively with all other response variables (both at baseline and follow-up), but there was no association with LDL at follow-up".

And, " In conclusion, this study supports current food-based dietary guidelines suggesting that a 'Western' dietary pattern with high intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages and red and processed meats and low intakes of wine, cheese, vegetables, and high-fiber foods is associated with detrimental effects on cardio-metabolic health".

The results clearly suggested that if you are following a traditional diet with high fruits and vegetable and fewer in processed food, saturated and trans fat, and red meat accompanied with moderate exercise daily, you are at substantially decreased risk metabolic syndrome, compared to those who follow the Western diet.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers examined the pure allicin, prepared biosynthetically by reacting synthetic alliin with an immobilized alliinase enzyme in the protection against cardiovascular disease.

S-ally-mercapto captopril (CPSSA), a new stable synthetic compound produced by a chemical reaction between allicin and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril was tested in a fructose-induced metabolic syndrome rat model.

Allicin (8 mg/(kg day)) used alone significantly reduced insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations, and had a slight effect on SBP associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome.

On the other hand, Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) only improved blood pressure and homocysteine.

Treatment with a low dose of CPSSA (5mg/(kg day)) lowered SBP but did not improve any other measured parameter, while treatment with a higher dose Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.

In other words, CPSSA exerted a strong anti-metabolic syndrome better than those of individual compound in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " the combined molecule CPSSA integrates the anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering, and homocysteine-reducing effects of both allicin and captopril, making it a potential cardiovascular protective agent".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cucumber, the Potential Anti Cancer Whole Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

Most common types of cancer in Canada are non-melanoma skin cancer, lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer.

Most cases of primary cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of a specific organ.

At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients with cancer are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, all cancers not only share the general symptoms of gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue, they also induce specific symptoms, such as bleeding and severe pain, depending on the location of the tumor.

At this stage, most cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Conventionally, cancer at the localized stage is normally treated with surgery to remove the tumor and radiotherapy to kill off the remaining cancer cells. However, if cancer has spread, a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy may be necessary.

There are a number of prevalent factors that have been found to increase the risk of cancer. Some researchers suggested the rise of cancer in older adults probably is associated with increased life expectancy over the past few decades.

Dr. Anisimov VN, the scientist at the cancer team at the N.N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology said, "A significant increase in the number of old people in the populations of developed countries was followed by an increase in morbidity and mortality resulting from main age-related diseases -- cardiovascular, cancer, neurodegenerative, diabetes mellitus, a decrease in resistance to infections".

And, " There was a high positive correlation between the type of geroprotector-induced aging delay and the pattern of tumor development in the same population of animals. The first type of geroprotectors did not influence the incidence of the tumor but increased tumor latency".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a potential anti-cancer natural compound with no side effect, researchers examined the cellular function of Pediococcus pentosaceus CRAG3 (GenBank ID: JX679020), a novel isolated from the fermented cucumber.

In vitro,. according to the cytotoxicity analysis, the dextran novel dextran from Pediococcus pentosaceus CRAG3 exerted cytotoxic effects against cervical cancer (HeLa) and colon cancer (HT29) cell lines.

According to the additional differentiation, the efficacy of dextran anticancer activity was attributed to its function in enhancing the growth of macrophage from the immune system.

In heat shock protein Hsp90, indirectly induced multiple pathways that lead to angiogenesis and metastasis in cancer, researchers examined the Vitexin from the Cucurbitaceae family in the restraining angiogenesis activity of this protein.

According to the docking results, Vitexin, a prominent glycosylated natural flavonoid, showed a promising inhibitory potential against Hsp90.

in other words, Vitexin protected the cell integrity against the alternation of cell DNA induced heat shock protein Hsp90.

Dr. Sharma N, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "Vitexin to hold prominent antiangiogenic potential surpassing different in silico parameters and thus expected to be a multi-targeted novel antiangiogenic lead".

Taken altogether, cucumber may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Vitexin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Protects Us Against Diseases Associated with Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress occurs when the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants is imbalanced. In other words, oxidative stress is a result caused by either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Free radicals are an unstable atom with a lone electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order to become stable, free radicals must steal or donate an electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction which is highly reactive that can be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation.

Free radical exists in and outside our body.  Externally, the air we breathe, the food we eat and environmental toxins and internally, the cell's metabolism, all contribute to the production of free radicals.

On the other hand, antioxidants can either be produced by the body internally or induced by the consumption of antioxidant-rich externally.

Under normal condition, in a healthy individual, the production of antioxidant enzymes by the body is more than enough to counter the levels of free radicals in the body.  However, for people with a weakened immune system or immature immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidant-rich foods may be necessary.

Maintaining the healthy levels of antioxidant in the body is the best way to prevent diseases associated with oxidative stress, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the urgency to discover a bioactive compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the anti-adipogenic effect of the polyphenol-rich extract obtained from chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot, raspberry Rubus idaeus L., bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus L., and cranberry Vacciniummacrocarpon Aiton fruits.

According to the tested assays, treatment with the extract (25-100 μg/mL) significantly decreased lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species generation in adipocytes without showing cytotoxicity.

The extract at a concentration of 100 μg/mL suppressed adipogenesis and lipogenesis by inhibiting the receptors involved gene expression.

Moreover, the extract also exerted the anti-adipogenic effect by a significant increase in the expression of adiponectin (4.4-fold) and decreased leptin expression (90%) made by adipose cells.

In the study to investigate the antihyperglycemic effects of four extracts obtained from leaves and fruits of Vaccinium myrtillus and Vacciniumcorymbosum in diabetic rats randomly divided into seven equal groups: NC-normal control, DC-diabetic control, PC-positive control treated with metformin, VML-received V. myrtillus leaf extract, VMLF-received VML and fruit extract, VCL-received V. corymbosum leaf extract, and VCLF-received VCL and fruit extract, researchers found that according to the Body weight and glucose levels monitored every second week and after 8 weeks of treatment, serum glucose, insulin, and malondialdehyde measurement

* VML treated group showed no significant decrease in weight compared to a decrease in body weight in all diabetic groups in the first weeks.

* VML, VMLF, and VCLF groups demonstrated a decrease in blood glucose levels compared to the increase in the DC, PC, and VCL groups.

* Additionally, serum insulin and glucose levels at the end of the experiment were lower in VML, VMLF, and VCLF groups compared to other unimproved groups.

* More importantly, V. myrtillus extracts prevented the development of cataract compared with the DC group (P < .05).

The findings suggested that bilberry processes antioxidative stress activity against the onset of obesity and retinal degenerative disease.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Kitchen Spice Turmeric Protects the Skin Cells Integrity Against Psoriasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by the speeds up of the life cycle of skin cells, leading to cells build up rapidly on the surface of the skin.

Symptoms of psoriasis caused by the extra skin cells form scales and red patches can be itchy and painful.

Epidemiologically, psoriasis patches can range from a few spots or large areas. A most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis,  a condition that induces dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.

The causes of psoriasis are not identified. Researchers do not know why people with
the same health conditions in the same family, some are prone to psoriasis while others do not.

Certain risk factors such as family history, viral and bacterial infections, weakened immune systems, persistent stress, smoking, and obesity are associated with risk of psoriasis.

Conventionally, topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed medication for the treatment fo the condition, particularly in patients with mild to moderate psoriasis.

If you are using corticosteroids for the treatment of psoriasis, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of psoriasis, an autoimmune and recurrent chronic inflammatory skin disorder, researchers examined a turmeric tonic as immune modulation and anti-inflammatory therapy on scalp psoriasis.

The study included a total of 40 patients with mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into two groups.

The treatment group received turmeric tonic twice a day for 9 weeks, whereas the other group received a placebo applied in the same manner.

Based on the results from the assessment of baseline, weeks 3, 6, and 9, treatment group not only significantly reduced the erythema, scaling and in the duration of lesions (PASI score), but also improved the patients' quality of life. compared to placebo.

Researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "The clinical effects of turmeric tonic on scalp psoriasis were satisfactory overall. This formulation could be considered as a treatment for scalp psoriasis".

In order to reveal more information about turmeric anti-psoriasis activity, researchers reviewed the effect of turmeric in the inhibition of inflammatory enzymes mainly involved in the inflammatory process of psoriasis.

The study included the examination of the randomized, clinical and therapeutic benefit of a novel topical formulation, included turmeric on 34 patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis.

The treatment group showed a significant improvement in the symptoms of psoriasis and
the clinical and quality of life parameters compared to the untreated group.

Based on the findings, Dr. the lead scientist said, "the proposed microemulgel may well be considered as an alternative in some patients and most likely as an add-on therapeutic option for many patients suffering from plaque psoriasis".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed bioactive ingredient curcumin may be considered supplements for the treatment of psoriasis,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Onset of Diabetic Complications

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by the failure of the body to utilize the insulin in converting glucose to energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

Most cases of diabetes are associated with either beta cells of the pancreas died-off or insulin receptor site clogged-up by fat and cholesterol.

Diabetic complications in most cases are caused by long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes.

Hyperglycemia occurs in diabetics due to uncontrolled diet, skip diabetes medication and improper use of insulin injection.

Most common complication of diabetes is associated with the damage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the related organ and tissues, leading to the risk for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications.  includes
* Cardiovascular disease
* Nerve damage
* Kidney damage
* Eye damage
* Foot damage
And skin problems

Dr. Waqas Sami, in the evaluation of the effect of diet and type 2 diabetes wrote, "Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for the rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries".

And, "In type 2 diabetics, recently, elevated HbA1c level has also been considered as one of the leading risk factors for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. Improvement in the elevated HbA1c level can be achieved through diet management; thus, the patients could be prevented from developing diabetes complications".

In other words, by following a healthy diet to normalize the levels of HbA1c level, accompanied by moderate exercise, risk of diabetic complication can be manageable.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of alliin, the most abundant sulfur compound in garlic antidiabetic complications against glycation.

Where advanced glycation is considered one of the major pathways associated with the development and progression of a number of diabetic complications including nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy.

Based on the results, alliin exerted a significant effect on glucose and methylglyoxal (MG)-induced by glycation of superoxide dismutase (SOD), that leads to decreased the antioxidant enzyme activity, fragmentation/cross-linking in fragment ion association with impaired cross-link, and reduced cross-reactivity with anti-SOD antibodies.

Moreover, the expression of glycation of SOD also leads to the formation of AGEs and fibrils.

In other words, alliin offered protection against elevated levels of glucose or MG induced glycation of SOD.

Additionally, alliin efficacy against the onset of hyperglycemia was comparable with that of quercetin which is reported to be a potent natural inhibitor of glycation.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Alliin has a good antiglycating effect and hence is expected to have therapeutic potential in the prevention of glycation-mediated diabetic complications".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention of glycation-mediated diabetic complications, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric, he Natural Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Type II diabetes is an acquired chronic and medical condition caused by insufficiency of insulin entering the bloodstream, leading to abnormally high blood glucose.

In other words, type II diabetes developing is due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin caused by the loss of beta cells or the body does not properly use the insulin it makes as a result of insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat or cholesterol.

Although type II diabetes is a disease associated with adult-onset, today, the condition has been diagnosed in children with an alarming rate due to childhood obesity.

Most common symptoms of type II diabetes are increased thirst, frequent urination, unintended weight loss, fatigue.

In severe cases, patients with type II diabetes also experience symptoms of slow-healing sores, frequent infections, blurred vision.

Untreated type II diabetes may induce complications of diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease (nephropathy), diabetic neuropathy, and macrovascular problems.

As of today, there is no single cause and cure for type 2 diabetes. However, researchers suggested overweight, family history, aging, race and medical conditions of prediabetes and gestational diabetes are some prevalent factors associated with the increased risk of the disease.c

Some researchers suggested that type 2 diabetes may be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. David Hefner in the article "Western Diet Linked to Type 2 Diabetes", wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains, and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes".

And, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods".

In other words, if you are following the high-fat diet, you are at a higher risk of type II diabetes. is

In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effect of Curcumin (CUR; diferuloylmethane) in the increased oxidative stress and the proinflammatory state that contributes to the development and progression of the diseases.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their clearance by antioxidant defense mechanisms.

Curcumin improved the function of hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism which was dysfunctioned in patients with T2DM.

In vitro, curcumin was found to induce the liver protective effect in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism.

Furthermore, curcumin exerted antidiabetic potential by ameliorating skeletal muscle insulin resistance in rodents with diet-induced insulin resistance via an increase of the uptake and oxidation of fatty acids.

Moreover, curcumin also found to improve insulin sensitivity in muscle tissue of insulin-resistant rodents by an increase of the cellular glucose uptake by enhancing the GLUT4 translocation.

In adipose tissue analysis, curcumin protected the adipose tissue function, by protecting the normal adipokine production, FFA release and preventing inflammation, that is associated with the pathogenesis of T2DM.

In pancreatic β-cells differentiation, curcumin enhanced the pancreatic β-cell function under diabetic conditions.

On metabolic dysfunction, curcumin improved the glycemic status and insulin sensitivity demonstrated in high-fat-diet- (HFD-) fed C57BL/6J mice and C57BL/6J ob/ob mice.

More recently, curcumin exerted a positive effect of CUR on metabolic abnormalities associated with T2DM have been confirmed in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats by attenuating insulin resistance and glucose intolerance through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of type II diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry, Protects the Elderly Vision Against the Initiation of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Age-related macular degeneration is a medical condition which causes irreversible blurring of the central vision in people over age 60.

Elderly at the early stage of age-related macular degeneration is asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of slightly blurred central vision. Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.

Over time, age-related macular degeneration may affect the vision including the reading as the blurred area increased in size.

The advanced age-related macular degeneration has been found to induce irreversible blindness and visual impairment, according to the epidemiological studies.

According to statistics, approximately 11 million people in the US have some form of age-related macular degeneration. The risk of getting advanced age-related macular degeneration increases from 2% for those ages 50-59 to nearly 30% for those over the age of 75.

Age-related macular degeneration can be classified into 2 types
* The common AMD is the dry form caused by the gradual degeneration of the central retinal tissues, affecting 90% of patient s with AMD.  Some patients with the dry form of AMD have been found to develop into the wet form over time.

* The wet form of AMD is caused the breaking of capillary under the macula, accounting only 10% of AMD.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration found in a large number of elderly, researchers evaluated the efficacy of a drug containing lutein 6 mg, zeaxanthin 0.5 mg, vitamin C 60 mg, vitamin E 7 mg, vitamin A 1.5 mg, vitamin B2 1.2 mg, rutin 25 mg, zinc 5 mg, Selenium 25 mcg, and bilberry extract 60 mg with Ginkgo biloba leaf extract 60 mg on the retina in type 2 diabetes patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and those with combined fundus pathology (DR plus age-related macular degeneration (AMD))

The study included 180 patients (180 eyes) with type 2 diabetes divided into 6 groups of 30 each. DR was graded according to E. Kohner and M. Porta classification, AMD--AREDS classification.

group 1 consisted of patients with DRO,; group 2--DR1 without DM, group 3--DR1 with DM, group 4--DRO and "dry" AMD (AREDS 1-3), group 5--DR1 with no DM but with AMD (AREDS 1-3), and group 6--DR1 with DM and AMD (AREDS 1-3).

Treatment with antioxidant and angioprotective agents has been proven effective in type 2 diabetes patients with preclinical (DRO) and early (DR1) diabetic retinopathy and those with DR and "dry" AMD (AREDS 1-3) in terms of functional and morphological parameters of the retina.

However, a combined antioxidant and double-dose angioprotective (240 mg) therapy appeared to be the most effective compared to those of single treatment.

Futhermore, in the investigation of bilberry's flavonoids, the potent antioxidants, scavenging free radicals for the treatment of multiple age-related ocular disorders.

According to the results of from 1.5 to 3 month OXYS rats given control diets or those supplemented with 25% bilberry extract (BE, 20 mg on kg of body weight including 4.5 mg of anthocyanidin) or vitamin E (40 mg/kg) as a drag for comparison, 3 months BE treatment reversed the cataract and macular degeneration and completely prevented impairments in the lenses and retin, compared to no significant effects of vitamin E.

Furthermore, both BE and VE were found to decrease lipid peroxides in the retina and serum of OXYS rats.

Based on the findings, Dr. Fursova AZh, the lead scientist said, "The results suggest that the OXYS rat strain is the useful model for macular degeneration and senile cataract and long-term supplementation with BE is effective in the prevention of macular degeneration and cataract".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
