Ginger, May Detox Your Liver Against Toxicity, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Hepatotoxicity is a condition caused by the accumulation of toxin in the liver, leading to liver dysfunction or reduced liver function.

Acute liver toxicity is caused by short-term exposure to toxic chemicals such as overdose of medication.

Chronic liver toxicity is due to long-term exposure to toxic substances including excessive alcohol drinking and long term use of certain medicines.

The liver is a large internal organ of the human body that protects us by filtering the blood come from the digestive system before passing to other parts of the body.

In other words, if the liver was damaged due to toxicity, the blood will be toxic, affecting the function of all organs and tissues in the body.

Epidemiological studies suggested liver dysfunction can also induce acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease, linked to the increased mortality, extending to those with chronic liver disease.

There are many causes associated with liver toxicity including chemicals toxins, which normally induces acute liver toxicity, such as those used in laboratories and industries, natural chemicals and long-term use of certain medication.

In the Western world, acute and chronic liver toxicity mostly are caused by long-term excessive alcohol drinking and long-term use of medication in the elderly.

Most common signs and symptoms of liver toxicity may include jaundice, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal discomforts, fatigue, Stomach pain. Nausea (upset stomach) Unusual tiredness. dark-colored urine, and pale-colored bowel movements.

If you are experiencing some of the above signs and symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule the possibility of liver toxicity.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists in finding a natural compound for the treatment of liver dysfunction investigated the ginger effect against Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) induced liver toxicity.

Male Wistar rats induced liver toxicity by Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) were orally treated with GE (100 and 250mg/kg) daily, accompanied by the administration of AFB 1 (200μg/kg) every alternative day for 28days.

In vitro and in vivo, pretreatment of HepG2 cells with GE significantly inhibited the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA strand break associated with the cytotoxic activity and cytotoxicity induced by AFB1.

In the study of male Wistar rats were orally treated with GE (100 and 250mg/kg) daily, with the administration of AFB 1 (200μg/kg) every alternative day for 28days, application of GE showed a significantly reduced AFB1 induced toxicity observed by the reduced serum markers associated with liver damage.

Furthermore, injection of GE showed the significant hepatoprotective effect by reducing not only the lipid peroxidation but also by enhancing the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host of tested animals.

Moreover, the administration of GE also protected the liver against toxicity through exhibiting the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway associated with the inhibition of inflammation and oxidative stress.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about ginger hepatoprotective activity, researchers examined ginger activity in preventing antituberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity in patients with tuberculosis.

Patients selected to the study were divided into the ginger and placebo groups (30 patients in each group). Patient in each group was given either 500 mg ginger (Zintoma)(®) or placebo one-half hour before each daily dose of antituberculosis drugs for 4 weeks.

During the study period, 26.7% of patients experienced antituberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity.

Treatment of ginger group experienced less liver toxicity in percentage, compared to the placebo group.

The results of the study strongly supported the use of ginger as a potential treatment of liver toxicity caused by adverse effects of some conventional medicine.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver toxicity, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey May Be Better Than Prednisolone for Acute and Chronic Pain Relief, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Antinociception is the process which blocks sensory neurons respond to potentially damaging stimuli associated with pain.

Pain is a natural reaction with an aim to protect our body against danger or damage.

Acute pain is the pain that lasts less few weeks.

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more 6 months.

Chronic pain has been found to be the most common reason for someone to see his/her physician.
Chronic pain in some cases was a major symptom of a medical condition that can only be treated physically and mentally through pain management.

However, most cases of chronic pain are associated with injury, such as a back sprain, or there may be an ongoing cause, such as illness.

Chronic pain can interfere with a person's quality of life and general functioning.

According to statistics provided by Dr. Donald Schopflocher, lead scientists in the evaluation of the prevalence of chronic pain in Canada, researchers wrote, "The prevalence of chronic pain for adults older than 18 years of age was 18.9%".

And, "Chronic pain prevalence was greater in older adults, and females had a higher prevalence at older ages compared with males. Approximately one-half of those with chronic pain reported suffering for more than 10 years. Approximately one-third of those reporting chronic pain rated the intensity in the very severe range".

Chronic pain according to the study is very common, affecting approximately 19% of Canadian over 18 years of age, mostly in older adults.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a potential natural whole food for pain relief examined the Tualang honey (Fēng Mì) and prednisolone on the nociceptive response in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

35 male Sprague-Dawley rats selected to the study were divided into 5 groups. Each group was given either distilled water, Tualang honey (0.2, 1.2 or 2.4 g/kg) or prednisolone (10 mg/kg) for 10 days.

Where prednisolone is a steroid medication used for pain relief.

According to the response to a noxious thermal stimulus using tail flick test on Day 10, the tail flick latency time was significantly higher in the groups that received 1.2 g/kg and 2.4 g/kg of Tualang honey and 10 mg/kg of prednisolone, compared to the control group.

Compared to the groups treated with prednisolone or distilled water, Tualuang honey treatments showed no effects on other parameters.

In other words, Tualang honey treatment group showed signs of abnormal behavior, such as total food pellet intake or weight loss.

Dr. Aziz CB, the lead scientist at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, said, "preemptive administration of Tualang honey (1.2 g/kg and 2.4 g/kg) and prednisolone (10 mg/kg) had reduced the pain responses".

Based on these results, Tualang honey processes a strong antinociceptive better than those of corticosteroids (prednisolone).

In order to reveal more information about honey antinociceptive activity, researchers compared several kinds of honey pain relief efficacy.

Acacia honey showed most effective dose-dependent antinociceptive activity compared to the untreated group in tail-flick and paw-withdrawal tests, respectively.

Most tested honey exerted antinociceptive activity of reaching the maximum at 60 min post-treatment then gradually decreased, whereas the activity of indomethacin was persistent at 120 min post-treatment.

Interestingly, the major constituents found in honey such as fructose, glucose, maltose, and sucrose used alone do not demonstrate any effect compared to the whole food.

The results strongly suggested that there must be other compounds in the honey that process a significant antinociceptive property or all active ingredients in honey work together to stimulate the pain relief activity.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly, Tualang and Acacia honey may be considered a functional remedy for acute and chronic pain relief, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Inhibits Breast Cancer Cells Against Proliferation, Researchers Found

By Kyle J. Norton

Breast cancer is the medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the breast tissue due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue either from the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

According to the statistics, in the US, 1 in 8 women (about 12.4%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2018, over 260,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed.

The 5 years of the survival rate of early diagnosis of breast cancer is close to 100%. This result suggested that women should self examine their breasts every month, particularly during the day's menstruation for preventive measure.

By age analysis, according to epidemiological studies, rates of breast cancer are low in women under 40, accounting only 5% of all breast cancer cases.

However, the rates begin to increase after age 40 and women who are over the age of 70 are associated with the highest risk of the disease.

These results strongly suggested that declines hormones production in the older women may have a direct implication on the breast cancer onset.

Dr. Ruth C Travis, the lead scientist in the concern of estrogen exposure and breast cancer risk in menopausal women explained, "Although risk for breast cancer increases with age, there is a marked decline in the rate of increase in risk with age following the loss of ovarian function, either as a result of a bilateral oophorectomy or due to the menopause".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers with an aim to find a potential natural compound for the treatment of breast cancer investigated the polyphenolic extracts from the edible part of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.)
chemopreventive and anticancer activity.

Administration at the high doses of polyphenolic extracts (AEs) induced apoptosis and decrease the invasive potential of the human breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB231.

Artichoke also displayed a significant increase of senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) staining associated with a decreased cell proliferation, the G1/S cell cycle arrest cells, altered cell morphology, against the breast cancer cell line.

Furthermore, the herbal medicine also exhibited the tumor suppressor genes, p16(INK4a) and p21(Cip1/Waf1) in MDA-MB231 cells. In other words, artichoke caused cancer cell apoptosis by the increased expression of a series of tumor suppressive genes.

Cell growth arrest was found to be correlated with the increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in AEs treated breast cancer cells.  In other words, AE exhibited the production of free radicals in the induction of cancer cells cytotoxicity.

The scientists after taking into account co and confounders, wrote in the final report, " Chronic AEs treatment inhibits breast cancer cell growth via the induction of premature senescence through epigenetic and ROS-mediated mechanisms".

Moreover, in order to reveal the polyphenolic extracts (AEs) of artichoke against breast cancer, researchers evaluated the antitumor effect of polyphenolic extracts from the edible part of artichokes (AEs).

Polyphenolic extracts (AEs) injection reduced cancer cell viability and inhibited cell growth in a dose-dependent manner.

Injection of AEs triggered apoptosis and cell death programming in the mitochondrial and death-receptor pathway.

The anti-cell proliferation also was observed by an increase of the Bax: Bcl2 ratio associated with the cancer apoptosis and proteins involved cell cycle division,  tumor suppressive gene, and decreased the expression of the cellular proliferative enzyme.

These results strongly indicated the cancer cell motility and invasion capabilities of highly invasive MDA-MB231 cells were remarkably inhibited by AEs-treatment.

Dr. Mileo AM, said, "AEs reduced cell viability, inhibited cell growth, triggered apoptotic mechanisms, and showed inhibitory properties against the invasive behavior of MDA-MB231 cancer cell line".

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly polyphenolic compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment fo breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry Protects the Retinal Structures Against Retinal Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

The retina is a thin membranous lining at the back of the eye located near the optic nerve that allows us to see by sensing light and sending signals to the brain.

People with the retinal disease may experience symptoms of seeing floating specks or cobwebs,  blurred or distorted (straight lines look wavy) vision depending on the location of retinal damage.

In serious cases,  the retinal disease may cause complete loss of the vision.

Treatment of retinal disease completely depends on the condition. Most cases of the treatment goals are to stop or slow the disease. Untreated retinal diseases have been found to induce severe vision loss or blindness.

The exact causes of retinal disease are not identified. However, high blood cholesterol, glucose, and hypertension, smoking, exposure to sunlight are some major risk factors associated with the onset of retinal diseases.

Some researchers suggested that genetic preposition may have a strong implication in the facilitation of retinal diseases.

Dr. Peter J Francis, in the study of the genetics of inherited retinal disease, wrote, "Over the subsequent 150 years, a huge number of articles have been dedicated to the description of the various patterns of hereditary retinal diseases, also known as retinal dystrophies".

And, "One of the genes, RPE65, has become of particular significance following the finding of a spontaneously occurring mutation in the equivalent gene in the Briard dog. Trials of gene replacement therapy have proved successful in restoring sight to such affected dogs and in the next couple of years the first human trials of gene therapy by replacing human photoreceptor RPE65are timetabled".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists with an aim to find a natural and active compound for the treatment of retinal diseases examined the complex lutein formula (CLF) by combining several natural compounds: Calendula officinalis, Lycium barbarum, Vaccinium myrtillus, Cassia obtusifolia, and Rhodiola Rosea retinal functions in an animal model.

Without treatment of complex lutein formula (CLF), animals exposed to light for 7 days decreased significantly retinal function.

However,  animals received the CLF exhibited superior performance of a retinal function, despite light exposure.

Injection of CLF animals also preserved a greater portion of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) (i.e. the nuclei of photoreceptors) compared with the animals that had not received the formula after 7 days of light exposure.

Dr. Cheng YP, the lead scientist wrote, " These results revealed that our dietary CLF supplement attenuated retinal function loss resulting from long-term light exposure".

In order to expose more information about bilberry anti retinal diseases, researchers investigated the neuroprotective effects of bilberry extract against photo-stress in murine retinas.

Light-induced visual function impairment through a stomach tube in Balb/c mice (750 mg/kg body weight) visual function impairment was restored by the injection of bilberry extract.

The retinal protective activity of bilberry extract was associated with the suppression of photo-induced apoptosis in the photoreceptor cell layer and shortening of the outer segments of rod and cone photoreceptors.

Bilberry extract treatment also inhibited the production of reactive oxygen species that reversed transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers by enhancing the levels of antioxidant.

Dr. Osada H and colleagues said, " bilberry extract attenuates photo-induced apoptosis and visual dysfunction most likely, and at least in part, through ROS reduction, and subsequent ER stress attenuation in the retina".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of retinal diseases with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, May Be the Best Anti Hyperglycemic Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition caused by your body inability to make enough insulin.

Most cases of hyperglycemia can be controlled by the following diabetes guidance.

By eating a healthy diet high in fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), whole-wheat flour and wheat bran, accompanied by healthy fish, patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose without worrying the onset of hyperglycemia.

Some researchers suggested that hyperglycemia may be harder to control in obese patients with type 2 diabetes due to the alternation of mechanisms associated with the production of insulin.

Dr. Martyn JA, the lead scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospital wrote, "Obesity is a major cause of type 2 diabetes, clinically evidenced as hyperglycemia".

And,  "The altered glucose homeostasis is caused by faulty signal transduction via the insulin signaling proteins, which results in decreased glucose uptake by the muscle, altered lipogenesis, and increased glucose output by the liver".

Scientists on finding a natural compound for the treatment of hyperglycemia examined the anti-high blood glucose of [6]-gingerol, a major chemical compound found in ginger.

The study included C57BL/6 mice fed with [6]-gingerol at two different doses on a high-fat diet or standard diet for a period of 17weeks.

[6]-gingerol supplementation fed group showed a significantly reduced plasma glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and insulin levels caused by high-fat diet.

Where levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase are normally used for the testing of liver damage.

Prolonged hyperglycemia also activated the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), particularly in diabetes population.

Further analysis of the anti-hyperglycemic activity of [6]-gingerol supplement, researchers found that
[6]-gingerol group inhibits the complications of prolonged high blood glucose by reducing the production of the advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) through proteins associated with the stimulating the production antioxidants.

Moreover, the anti-hyperglycemia of  [6]-gingerol supplement also was observed by the balancing of antioxidants enzymes produced by the tested mice against levels of overexpression of free radicals caused by the high-fat diet.

Additionally, the levels of oxidative stress also inhibited by the injection of [6]-gingerol supplement observed by enhancing levels of heme oxygenase-1 and glyoxalase 1, the detoxified enzymes.

Dr. Sampath C, the lead scientist at the final report wrote, "[6]-gingerol are potential dietary compounds that can alleviate diabetes-induced complications".

In order to reveal more information about ginger anti-high blood glucose property, researchers evaluated the ginger efficacy in the disruption of slow-wave rhythm caused by acute hyperglycemia.

The study included 22 healthy humans underwent fasting electrogastrography during hyperglycemic clamping to 250 to 290 mg/dl after double-blind placebo or ginger root (1 g).

Ginger treatment group displayed a significant reduction of cardiac dysrhythmia, an abnormal heartbeat caused by acute hyperglycemia.

However, the application of ginger showed no effect on the heartbeat if cardiac dysrhythmia was elicited by a prostaglandin E(1) analog.

The finding suggested that ginger exerted anti-hyperglycemia-induced complications through inhibiting the production of prostaglandins which has a strong effect on the central nervous system in the regulation of blood sugar homeostasis.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications caused by prolonged hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Raises the Levels of "Good Bacteria" in the Gut

By Kyle J. Norton

Gut microbiota is a complex community with over trillion microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts.

In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.

In fact, balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning and modulation of the immune function.

Use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illness such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

Further, the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota functions also alters immune homeostasis, leading to the onset of autoimmune disorders which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases.

Compared to probiotics, the prebiotics is compound in food that induce the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.

In other definition, it is a special form of dietary fiber that acts as a fertilizer that promotes the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

In the gastrointestinal tract, prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.
In other words, prebiotics raises the levels of healthy bacteria against bad bacteria.

Researchers on the finding a natural therapeutic which promotes probiotics examined the artichoke preparation on microbiota ecology and immune status.

The study included 48 piglets divided into 6 groups (n = 8), which received from day 10 of life probiotic-unsupplemented (PU) or probiotic-supplemented (PS, containing 0.5 g/kg diet and contained: Lactococcus lactis, Carnobacterium divergens, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) diets.

The PU and PS diets were formulated without prebiotic addition (control) or with the addition of 2% of inulin from chicory root (IN) or 4% of dried Jerusalem artichoke tubers (DJA).

Feeding DJA diets showed to improve the balance of the gut microbiota by increasing the caecal valeric acid level, and decreasing the concentration of isoacids in the colon,

Furthermore, DJA diets also reduced β-glucosidase and β-glucuronidase activity induced gut toxicity in the middle colon and increased Bifidobacterium spp. populations in the proximal and distal colon.

These results suggested that DJA modified the microbiota ecology in the large intestine of young pigs to a greater extent as a prebiotic.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy as a  prebiotic for the treatment of patients with unbalanced gut microbiota with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Potential Remedy in Speeding Up Bone Healing, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Bone healing is a natural process of broken bone healing. The bone healing process goes through three overlapping stages, including inflammation, soft and callus production, and bone remodeling.

Improper bone healing occurred when two ends of the broken bone are not lined up properly, leading to the bone healing with a deformity called a malunion.

Most cases of improper bone healing have been found to involve angulation (bend) and/or rotation flexibility or extension. In some cases, improper bone healing can also cause stiffness in the finger, hand, wrist or elbow.

If you experience some of the above symptoms after a broken bone, you may have an improper bone healing. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Some researchers in the concern of the risk of improper bone healing in obese patients wrote, "Obesity is a risk factor for various orthopedic diseases, including fractures. Obesity's influence on circulating hormones and cytokines and bone mineralization ultimately influence the body's osteogenic response and bone mineralization, potentially increasing the risk of fracture and impacting fracture healing".

Luckily, the doctor continued, "Obese/overweight children did not have a delay in release to activities compared with children of normal weight".

The results strongly suggested the correlation between obese and the risk of bone fracture and fracture healing in children.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural remedy for speed-up bone healthy investigation honey activity on
alveolar osteitis (OA).

Alveolar osteitis (AO) is a complication of tooth extraction.

50 patients of AO were included in the study. After cleansing of the affected socket, honey dressings applied were changed daily for the first 2 days and then alternatively.

Honey application sped up the bone and granulation tissue healing and gingiva healing in about one week on most patients.

According to the reading of the CRP levels, treatment of AO with honey dressing showed a significant decrease from the pre-treatment values, an indication of fast recovery for inflammation.

The microbiological assay also showed the presence of normal commensal flora at AO sites including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Enterococcus.

The results suggested that honey topical dressing speeds up bone healing and tissue recovery through inhibiting microbial overexpression and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

In order to reveal more information about bone healing of honey, researchers examined the honey on the healing of mandibular bone defects in a rat model.

24 wild-type Wistar rats included in the study were shaved, disinfected and extraoral incised with a 2 × 2 mm defect at mandibular angle. Only the experimental group defect was filled with sterile honey.

After 4 weeks, the defects were filled in four samples of the honey treatment group, compared to all samples of the control group which is still in the mineralization stage.

According to the histomorphometric assay, honey treatment showed a significant improvement in the mean new bone formation compared to those of the control group, both after 2 and 4 weeks.

Taken altogether, honey may speed up bone healing without inducing any side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
