Herbal Butterbur, the Anti Asthma Functional Remedy

Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the prevention and treatment of asthma with no side effects, according to studies.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease, affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Most signs and symptoms of asthma are triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances such as allergens.

Researchers do not know why some people are prone to the substances that trigger the symptoms of asthma while others do not, even they process the same health conditions in the same family.

According to the American Lung Association, there are many risk factors can trigger the onset of the diseases, including respiratory problems during infancy and childhood such as wheezing, children who experience viral respiratory infections, children who have an allergic condition, such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or allergic rhinitis (hay fever), can also develop asthma.

Most preventable risk factors that cause the onset of adults asthma are smoking and obesity. Dr. Chen Y and colleagues at the University of Ottawa in the investigation of the risk asthma in among female Canadians wrote, "The prevalence of asthma was 10.4% for males and 11.2% for females aged 12-24 years. Among the subjects aged 25 years or more, the prevalence varied from 4.1% to 5.8% for men and from 4.9% to 6.4% for women".

And, "Female smokers demonstrated a 1.7-fold increase in the prevalence of asthma compared with female nonsmokers" and " the prevalence of asthma increased with increasing body mass index in females".

The results strongly suggested that if you are female and you don't want to have asthma, you must lose weight and quit smoking.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

It has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

With an aim to find a natural remedy for the treatment of asthma with no side effects, researchers at the examine the phytoceuticals (non-nutritional but beneficial plant chemicals) used as a pharmacotherapy for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Recently, herbal butterbur has been found to benefit and improve treatments for lung disease,  particularly in that of airway inflammatory disease, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD.

Ovalbumin (OVA) immunized BALB/c mice selected to the experiment were given intranasally together with antigen challenge in the murine model of allergic airway disease (asthma)

The analysis of the inflammatory and immune parameters in the lung suggested FET treated mice exerted a significant effect in inhibiting the allergic response.

Furthermore, PET also inhibited airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and eosinophil recruitment into the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid upon allergen challenge observed by a medical procedure in which a bronchoscope is passed through the mouth or nose into the lungs but had no effect in the saline control mice.

According to the reading eosinophilic activation marker, PET at a concentration of 100 microg strongly lowered the levels of serum eosinophil peroxidase (EPO).

These results suggested inflammation, eosinophil recruitment, and mucus hyperproduction are significantly decreased in the lung with the administration of 100 microg PET. 

Moreover, at the concentration of 30 microg PET, researchers found that airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and inflammation of treated mice associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines reduced (IL-4, IL-5) and RANTES production involved the mediation of acute and chronic inflammation are strongly reduced without affecting the expression of IgE and eotaxin serum levels.

Where Eotaxin is a small protein produced in the lungs of asthmatic patients.

The finding indicated PET inhibited the expression of asthma through decreasing the airway hyperresponsiveness, airway inflammation, eosinophil recruitment, and mucus hyperproduction of the asthmatic mice, in a dose-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, herbal butterbur may be considered a natural remedy for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of asthma and COPD with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Butterbur Protects Our Airway Hyperresponsiveness in Asthma Patients, According to Studies

Herbal Butterbur may have a potential effect in reducing the airway hyperresponsiveness, one of 2 key pathophysiological features of asthma, some scientists found.

Airway hyperresponsiveness is a condition by an abnormal response of the airways to nonspecific stimuli, which results in airway obstruction.

It is also a reflection of an abnormally amplified response of airway nerves and mast cells to exogenous stimuli, as well as an intrinsic abnormality of the airway smooth muscle response.

Some researchers suggested, airway hyperresponsiveness is linked to both inflammation and repair of the airways and is partially reversible with therapy.

In fact, airway hyperresponsiveness can be objectively demonstrated by initiating the 20% fall in the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) after inhalation of histamine or methacholine) at a concentration below 8 mg/mL.

Although researchers do not know what causes hyperresponsiveness but they do know certain risk factors such as the sensitivity of airway nerves, mast cells, and smooth muscle by inflammatory mediators, along with loss of epithelial barrier function, reduced production of bronchoprotective factors, an intrinsic abnormality of airway smooth muscle, and structural changes to the airway, all are likely to play a part in the development of airway hyperresponsiveness.

In the understanding, the relationship between symptoms of asthma and airway hyperresponsiveness, researchers at the McGill University conducted a cohort study, including 457 asthmatic children diagnosed at the age of 3 to 4 years, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR).

At the final report of the experiment, the researcher wrote, " all patients with asthma persisting but not necessarily current symptoms of asthma have increased AHR,, which satisfies a proposed epidemiologic definition of asthma".

On finding a natural remedy for the treatment of asthma with no side effects, researchers examined the effect of herbal Petasites hybridus (butterbur) extract (Ze 339, PET) in the murine model of allergic airway disease (asthma).

In immunized BALB/c mice, PET showed a strongly inhibited the allergic response. PET inhibited airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and eosinophil recruitment into the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid upon allergen challenge but had no effect in the saline control mice.

At a concentration of 100 microg, PET revealed less inflammation, eosinophil recruitment and mucus hyperproduction in the lung, through inhibiting the immune response (RANTES (CCL5)) and production of proinflammatory cytokines associated with asthma without affecting the levels of IgE and eotaxin serum, a marker of asthma.

Furthermore, in the assessment of S-isopetasin, an antimuscarinic sesquiterpene of Butterbur as
a bronchodilator in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma exacerbations, researchers showed

S-isopetasin exerted the inhibitory effects similar to that of ipratropium bromide, a reference drug.

The duration of action of S-isopetasin (20 microM), also similar to that of ipratropium bromide (20 microM), was 3 h.

In contrast to ipratropium bromide, which non-selectively acts on muscarinic receptors, S-isopetasin preferentially acts on muscarinic M3 receptors.

Where Acetylcholine muscarinic M3 receptors (CHRM3) of the airway, expressed in the trachea and bronchi involved airway smooth muscle contraction and mucus secretion in asthma patients.

And, Ipratropium bromide, sold under the trade name Atrovent among others, used to open up the medium and large airways in the lungs. 

(P(enh)) value is the probability of obtaining an effect at least as extreme as the one in the sample data, assuming the truth of the null hypothesis.


Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with other primary therapy for the treatment of asthma with no side effects.

Herbal Anise, the Anti- Fungal Functional Remedy

Herbal Anise may be used for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection with no side effects, according to studies.

Yeasts, molds and mushrooms are types of fungi. The tiny microorganisms have cells with nuclear.

Most common fungal infections start from the lungs or the skin. Long-term use of antibiotics and people with the weakened immune system are susceptible to fungal infection, epidemiologically.

However, some researchers suggested that common risk factors for fungal infection also include pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, oral contraceptives, and inadequate therapy.

Candida albicans is the common cause of fungal infection in the Western world. It is  a member of a large group of an organism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast and mold that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract. 

Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans that do cause harmful effects, but overgrowth results in candidiasis.

Dr. M. Mar Rodríguez and colleagues in the examined the obesity in the change of the human gut mycobiome, wrote, "The human intestine is home to a diverse range of bacterial and fungal species, forming an ecological community that contributes to normal physiology and disease susceptibility".

And, "Mucor racemosus and M. fuscus were the species more represented in non-obese subjects compared to obese counterparts. Interestingly, the decreased relative abundance of the Mucor genus in obese subjects was reversible upon weight loss".

These results clearly suggested that obese people are more susceptible to fungal infection due to reduced levels of healthy gut mycobiome in the gut.  Weight loss can reverse this change.


Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.

Besides the main ingredient Anethole, the herbal plant also contains D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

On examing the antifungal activity of p-anisaldehyde (1), o-anisaldehyde (2) and m-anisaldehyde isolated from the herbal Anise in thirty-six fluconazole-sensitive and eleven fluconazole-resistant Candida isolates, researchers showed that all compounds exerted a significant effect in inhibiting the growth and sensitivity of the organisms at different concentrations.

The compound-1, compound-2, and compound-3 exerted a rapid irreversible action on fungal cells through the fungal membrane-located target.

All the compounds inhibited the electrochemical gradients creation in the plasma membrane of the fungi, at their respective MIC(90) values, leading to intracellular acidification and cell death observed by the expression of deep wrinkles, deformity and flowed content in the fungal membrane.


These results indicate that compound-1, compound-2, and compound-3 have significant antifungal activity against Candida.

In vitro, researchers examined the antifungal activities of fluid extract and essential oil obtained from anise fruits Pimpinella anisum L. (Apiaceae) on clinical isolates of seven species of yeasts and four species of dermatophytes.

Anise fluid extract showed antimycotic activity against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis and C. krusei with MIC values between 17 and 20%.

Anis fruits extracts also showed growth promotion activity on Geotrichum spp, a fungus associated with skin, sputum and feces.

Furthermore, Anise fruits extract inhibited the growth of dermatophyte species (Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis and M. gypseum) with MIC values between 1.5 and 9.0%.

Anise essential oil showed strong antifungal activity against yeasts with MIC lower than 1.56% (V/V) and dermatophytes with MIC lower than 0.78%, compared to the water extract.

These findings once again suggested that Anise essential oil exhibited stronger antifungal activities against yeasts and dermatophytes with MIC values between 0.10 and 1.56% (V/V), respectively, compared to the water extract.

Taken altogether, herbal Anise may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of a large and multicenter human study.

Herbal Anise, the Best Potential and Natural Remedy for Tongue Cancer with No Side Effects

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of tongue cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Tongue cancers is a medical condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the tongue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell of the inner lining tissue of the tongue. At stage 0, cancer cells are not found in the deeper layers of tissue, therefore, most patients at this stage may not experience any symptoms.

At the advanced stage, cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the tongue to infect other healthy tissues or organs through the circulation of fluids and blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Most common secondary metastasis of tongue cancer is the mouth and muscle surrounding the mouth.

In 2018, approximately 17, 000 new cases of tongue cancer were diagnosed, representing 1% of all cancer cases in the US. Tongue cancer also causes the death of 2,500 people in the country.

The lifetime risk of tongue cancer is 0.4 % including men and women, based on 2013-2015 data. The 5 years survival of all stages of tongue cancer is 65.8%, according to the National Cancer Institute.

With an aim to discover a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of tongue squamous carcinoma with no side effects researchers at the China Medical University, assessed the effects of safrole, one of important food-borne phytotoxin of herbal Anise.

Injection of safrole showed a significant effect in inducing apoptosis in human tongue squamous carcinoma SCC-4 cells.

Safrole-induced apoptosis was attributed to stimulate the function of a protein associated with the secured cell death pathways and inhibit the anti-apoptotic proteins expression.

These results were also observed through the ratio of the expression of apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins found after injection of safrole.

According to the real-time PCR assay, safrole also promoted the mRNA expressions of proteins involved the mediation of mitochondrial events of apoptosis in SCC-4 cells.

Dr. the lead scientist, wrote in the report, "Safrole is a cytotoxic effect in human tongue squamous carcinoma SCC-4 cells by inducing apoptosis. The induction of apoptosis of SCC-4 cells by safrole is involved in mitochondria- and caspase-dependent signal pathways".

Additonally in the examining aloe-emodin, one of the anthraquinones found in the anise seed, researchers assessed the anti-cancer effect of aloe-emodin on human tongue squamous carcinoma SCC-4 cells.

Injection of aloe-emodin induced cell death through cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner. 

Treatment with 30 microM of aloe-emodin led to cell cycle arrest through activation of the protein involved tumor suppression and suppressed the proteins associated with regulating progression through the cell cycle.

Furthermore, aloe-emodin promoted the release of apoptosis through several inducing factors (AIF) (including endonuclease G (Endo G), procaspase-9 and cytochrome c from the mitochondria via a loss of the mitochondrial membrane potential (DeltaPsi(m))).

Moreover, injection of the free radical scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and caspase inhibitors markedly blocked aloe-emodin-induced apoptosis.

Taken altogether, herbal Anise processed bioactive compounds safrole and aloe-emodin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of tongue squamous carcinoma.

Herbal Burdock, The Natural Remedy Which Processes Anti- Inflammatory Activity

Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with no side effects, according to studies.

Inflammation is a natural response of the human body against the foreign pathogens and stimuli that progress through many phases.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulating the blood vessel constriction and palette accumulated to the injury area to cover the wound and the proteins associated to the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the invasive microorganisms.

Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro. It has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.



The ingredients of herbal Burdock include carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colorings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone,dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of atopic dermatitis is a chronic, allergic inflammatory skin disease, researchers examined whether a butanol extract of A. lappa (ALBE) had previously unreported anti-allergic or anti-inflammatory effects.

On ConA-treated primary murine splenocytes, ALBE demonstrated significant inhibition of β-hexosaminidase release in RBL-2H3 cells by suppressing the mRNA expression in transmitting information between cells associated to the β-hexosaminidase release and proteins involved the production of inflammatory cytokines.

ALBE (100 μg/mL) suppressed not only the protein complex associated with transcription of DNA, cytokine production but also the pathway involved the regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in Concanavalin A (ConA) treated primary splenocytes.

Where Concanavalin-A is a lectin used in the experiment to trigger inflammatory responses.

Furthermore, in an experimental colitis model induced by 2,4,6 trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid, researchers evaluated ONP fraction (25 and 50 mg/kg/day) orally administered 48, 24 and 1 h prior to the induction of colitis and 24 h after.

Before application of ONP, TNBS treatment group showed an increased colonic wall thickness, edema, diffuse inflammatory cell infiltration, observed by the increased production of inflammatory cytokines and enzymes.

Contrarily, ONP fraction (25 and 50 mg/kg) treatment significantly reduced the macroscopic inflammation scores (p<0.05 and p<0.01, respectively) and morphological alterations associated with an increase in the mucus secretion. 

Injection of ONP fraction at 25 and 50 mg/kg also expressed significantly reduced levels of neutrophil infiltration and the cytokines, through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.

Compared to COX-2 overexpression of inflammation and pain in TNBS-treated rats, ONP fraction (50 mg/kg) administration reduced COX-2 overexpression.

The findings suggested that herbal Burdock fraction obtained from Arctium lappa processed gastrointestinal protective effects against acute colitis.

Taken altogether, herbal Burdock may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Herbal Burdock, the Natural Antibiotic Alternative

Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection with no side effects, according to studies.

Infection is a result of the invasion of microorganisms that have successfully multiplied in the host body and the reaction of host tissues.

Bacteria is a single cell microorganism. Most bacterias are not harmful, some may also benefit the digestive system. However, 1% of invasive bacteria can make us sick and damage the body tissue, such as bacteria associated with tuberculosis.

There are many ways to cause an infection including bacteria passed from person to person, transmitted by bites from insects or animals. and ingesting contaminated food or water.

Most common symptoms of infectious diseases are fever, diarrhea,  fatigue,  muscle aches, coughing, depending on the specific area of infection.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

Most bacteria are killed in the first phase of acute infection. In this phase, the immune white blood cells in the first line of defense in responding to the body tissue damage or injury by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off all invasive pathogens on the site of damage. 

However, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in most cases can destroy the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars as seen in liver infection.

What contributes to the overexpression proinflammatory and underexpression of anti-inflammatory cytokines of the body in the initiation of chronic inflammatory diseases?

Dr. Thomas W. McDade and colleagues in the investigation of the role of proinflammatory cytokines in risk of infection explained, "the metabolic syndrome may be characterized by dysregulated inflammation, in which an important anti-inflammatory signal is absent. Similarly, in a prospective study of patients with acute coronary syndromes, baseline IL-10 concentration was a significant predictor of death or myocardial infarction during 6 months of follow up, ......high IL-10 experienced an adverse outcome, compared to 21.8% of patients with high CRP but low IL-10

Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.

The plant has been used thousands of years in China medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

With an aim to the discovery of natural biocomponents from plants with antibacterial activity on endodontic microbiota for the new therapies, researchers evaluated the antibacterial activity of a phytotherapeutic agent prepared from an ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) extracted from Arctium lappa.

A total of 27 maxillary canines with a mixed bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans a Candida albicans were included in the study.

The teeth were divided into three groups and their canals filled with: group 1, calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol; group 2, a paste containing AcOEt fraction of A. lappa (Burdock) and propylene glycol; group 3, propylene glycol (control). 

At 7, 14 and 30 days, three teeth from each group opened, researchers found that mild bacterial growth was found in group 1 at all time intervals; in group 2 there was severe growth at 7 days, but no growth at 14 and 30 days.

These results indicated a significant antibacterial effect of AcOEt fraction of A. lappa in inhibiting the growth of all the microorganisms.

Furthermore, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity of rough extracts from leaves of Arctium lappa showed inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans selectively to specific target microorganisms.

In other words, each constituent in the extract of Burdock inhibited only a certain type of endodontic pathogens without affecting others.

Dr.Pereira JV, the lead author said, "the Arctium lappa constituents exhibited a great microbial inhibition potential against the tested endodontic pathogens".

More importantly, in the review of the antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeasts of extracts of 13 Brazilian medicinal plants, researchers found that only 10 plant extracts showed varied levels of antibacterial activity.

Arctium lappa exerted some degree of antibacterial activity compared to other plants, including Mikania glomerata, Sambucus canadensis, Plantago major and Erythrina species.

Burdock was one of 5 plants belonging to the Asteraceae family demonstrated the Rf values similar to the antibacterial compounds visible on bioautogram.

The finding strongly suggested Burdock and other 4 plants in the Asteraceae family may be used for the treatment of various infectious diseases.

Taken altogether, herbal Burdock may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with other primary medicine for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Herbal Burdock, the Potent Hepatoprotective Remedy

Herbal Burdock may process a liver protective activity against the onset of liver disease, according to the studies.

The liver is a large organ that processes the function in detoxifying various metabolites, synthesizing proteins, and producing bile for digestion.

Liver diseases are medical conditions of liver damage, leading to reduced function of the liver.

There are many risk factors that cause liver diseases, including genetic preposition, viral infections and long-term use of medication and excessive alcohol drinking.

Liver diseases in most case progress slowly. However, over time the damage can lead to cirrhosis, the main cause of liver failure, and a life-threatening condition.

According to the statistic, in the US, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are common disease-related causes of death.  Approximately 31,000 people in the U.S. die each year from cirrhosis.

Sadly, approximately, 3.5 to 4.6 million people in the U.S. are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus.

If you are experiencing symptoms of jaundice, persistent abdominal pain, and swelling, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of liver diseases.

A most common cause of liver disease in the third world is hepatitis viral infection, it may be a result of drinking contaminated water and food and lack of clean water.

However, in the Western world, obesity is the major cause of nonalcoholic liver disease. Dr. Sandra Milić, the lead scientist in the concern of the non-alcoholic liver disease in obese wrote,
"Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the world. Presentation of the disease ranges from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). NAFLD is a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome that includes central abdominal obesity along with other components. Up to 80% of patients with NAFLD are obese, defined as a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2."

These result clearly suggested if you are obese you are at 80% most likely to be infected by non- alcoholic liver disease.

On finding a natural remedy for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers at the Taipei Medical University examined the Arctium lappa Linne (burdock)hepatoprotective effects.

The experiment included a group of rats (n = 10) fed a liquid ethanol diet (4 g of absolute ethanol/ 80 ml of liquid basal diet) for 28 days and another group (n = 10) received a single intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 ml/kg carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) in order to potentiate the liver damage on the 21st day (1 day before the beginning of A. lappa treatment).

Control group rats were given a liquid basal diet which did not contain absolute ethanol.

Before administrating of herbal Burdock, ethanol group and the groups receiving ethanol supplemented with CCl(4). showed significant damage to the liver.

However, treated rat groups with a dose of 300 mg/kg A. lappa administered orally 3 times per day in both the 1-day and 7-day displayed significantly improved various pathological and biochemical parameters which were worsened by ethanol plus CCl(4)-induced liver damage, including decreased levels of serum triglyceride and lipid peroxidation and serum transaminase levels.

Where the elevated levels of serum transaminase is an indication of liver damage.

The finding clearly suggested that hepatotoxicity induced by ethanol and potentiated by CCl(4) could be alleviated with 1 and 7 days of A. lappa treatment.

Dr. Lin SC, the lead author wrote in the final report, "The hepatoprotective mechanism of A. lappa could be attributed, at least in part, to its antioxidative activity, which decreases the oxidative stress of hepatocytes, or to another unknown protective mechanism(s)".

Moreover, in male ICR mice injected with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4, 32 microl/kg, i.p.) or acetaminophen (600 mg/kg, i.p.) to induce liver damage, researchers found that injection of A. lappa significantly suppresses the serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) elevations induced by CCl4 or acetaminophen in a dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, A. lappa also alleviated the severity of liver damage based on histopathological observations.

Where the elevation of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) is the indication of liver damage.

The efficacy of A. lappa in the in-depth analysis assays was found to attribute to the antioxidant activity in inhibiting the expression of free radicals induced by CCl4 or acetaminophen 

A. lappa also was found to decrease the oxidative stress marker, malondialdehyde (MDA) content in CCl4 or acetaminophen-intoxicated mice.

Dr. Lin SC the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "A. lappa could protect the liver cells from CCl4 or acetaminophen-induced liver damages, perhaps by its antioxidative effect on hepatocytes, hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from CCl4 or acetaminophen".

Taken altogether, herbal Burdock may be considered a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver disease without inducing any side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
