Herbal Aloe Vera, the Potential Cure of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits at least three times a month for the last 3 months without preexistence of other diseases.

According to the statistic, IBS affects approximately over 11% of the population globally and only 30% of these patients consult physicians for their IBS symptoms. People with IBS without seeing their doctors were found to experience a significantly reduced quality of life and psychological symptoms.

Compared to the male counterpart, women are at high risk of the condition. Believe or not there is 25% less IBS diagnosed in the population of over 50 years of age.

People with family history and the genetic factors are at a higher risk of the condition onset and most patients diagnosed with IBS are found infected by other functional disease compared to the general population.

Besides family history, gender, and genetic factors, others most common risk factors of IBS include smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, younger age, according to epidemiological studies.

Some researchers suggested that sedentary lifestyle, a type of lifestyle involving little or no physical activity is also a major component in the Western world associated with IBS.

By examing the attenuation of gravitational aid to distal intestinal motility, resulting in damaging chronic intestinal distention, researchers at the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging, the prevalence of IBS irritable bowel syndrome have worsened in recent years owing to excessive dietary fiber intake.

Dr. said, "Potential solutions include augmenting weight-bearing time, moderating dietary fiber consumption, stimulating distal colon evacuation through chemical means and developing pharmaceuticals to block the reflexive distal colon distention associated with fiber consumption".

And, " Amplified intestinal distention commenced when all classes of Renaissance Europeans became the first group in human history to wear shoes, which led to a sedentary lifestyle that moderates gravitational aid to colon motility and evacuation".

Therefore, by engaging in daily moderate exercise and following a healthy diet, not only can prevent the syndrome but also treat IBS. Please consult with your dietitian for a better diet management that is suitable for you.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

Herbal medicine has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural compound or remedy for the prevention and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), researchers investigated the beneficial effects of a mixture of Aloe vera (AV) and Matricaria recutita (German chamomile, GC) in an experimental model.

IBS-induced rats by a 5-day divided to the groups of control (water), GC (300 mg/kg), loperamide (10 mg/kg), mixed AV and GC (50: 50 at doses of 150, 300 or 450 mg/kg assigned as Mix-150, Mix-300 and Mix-450, respectively).

Application of mixed AV and GC showed a significant reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers in the IBS-induced rats.

Futhermore, lipid peroxidation (LPO) in colonic cells was also decreased substantially in the mixture treatment group, compared to in the control group.

Moreover, GC inhibited only small bowel transit while the AV/GC mixture delayed gastric emptying at the doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg, compared to that of the AV/GC mixture which reduces colonic transit and small bowel transit at the dose of 150 mg/kg.

Dr. Asadi-Shahmirzadi A and colleagues at the final day of the experiment said, "The severity of stress-induced IBS was diminished by the AV/GC mixture at all doses used but not dose-dependently, via inhibiting colonic MPO activity and improving oxidative stress status".

In order to understant the addtional effects of Aloe vera in the treatment of IBS, researchers examined the efficacy of AV on IBS in refractory secondary care patients.

Patients with IBS )with 58 patients randomized, 49 completed the protocol to 1 month and 41 to 3 months) were randomized to receive AV or matching placebo for a month.

Symptoms were assessed at baseline, 1 and 3 months.

Aloe vera treatment group showed a significant effect in diarrhea at 1 month. There is a possibility that improvement occurred in patients with diarrhea or alternating IBS whilst taking AV.

The findings suggested that Aloe vera used alone or combined with chamomile for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pending to the results of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Andrographis, the Anti Hepatitis Functional Remedy, According to Human Study

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the prevention and treatment of hepatitis infection with no side effects, according to studies.

Hepatitis is a condition characterized by the destruction of a number of liver cells and the presence of inflammatory cells in the liver tissue.

Mose cases of hepatitis are caused by infection of the hepatitis viruses. However, excessive alcohol drinking, disorders of the gallbladder or pancreas, and long-term use of certain medication are also associated with the onset of the disease.

The term is unfortunately commonly used to refer to a particular group of viruses such as Hepatitis A, B, and C.

If you are experiencing persistent symptoms of fatigue, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, pale stool abdominal pain, and jaundice. please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of hepatitis.

In some cases, hepatitis can also be caused by to immune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the liver, leading to mild to severe chronic inflammation that hinders the liver function.

Dr. Yoshio Aizawa, the lead author in the liver diseases research team at the Jikei University Katsushika Medical Center in the examination of the complication of autoimmune hepatitis, wrote, "Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic progressive liver disease characterized by high levels of aminotransferases and autoantibodies, hypergammaglobulinemia, and interface hepatitis"

"There is confusion as to the definition of the disease entity and its boundaries in the diagnosis of overlap syndrome, drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis, and AIH with concomitant nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or chronic hepatitis C" and "Immunologically, disruption of the immune tolerance to autologous liver antigens may be a trigger of AIH".

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

With an aim to find a natural compound or remedy for the treatment of hepatitis with no side effects, researchers evaluated the anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) activity of andrographolide, a diterpenoid lactone extracted from Andrographis paniculata.

In HCV replicon and HCVcc infectious systems, andrographolide time- and dose-dependently suppressed HCV replication.

Combined with anti-hepatitis medicines, such as IFN-α, an inhibitor targeting HCV NS3/4A protease (telaprevir), or NS5B polymerase (PSI-7977), andrographolide exhibited a significant synergistic effect.

The anti antiviral effects of the diterpenoid lactone extracted from Andrographis paniculata.were attenuated by an HO-1-specific inhibitor or the inhibition of HO-1 gene involved the production of oxidative in contributing the anti-HCV activity.

Furthermore, Andrographolide also activated the alternation of the protein (p38 MAPK) associated with the response to stress stimuli.

Additionally, the Banaras Hindu University, study in the evaluation of the anti-hepatitis effects of Kalmegh(Andrographis paniculata Nees) in the decoction form in patients of infective hepatitis.

Injection of the decoction showed a marked symptomatic improvement in the majority of the cases.

The decoction also showed a statistically highly significant decrease in various liver function.

Moreover, the application also increased significantly total serum globulin fraction protein which plays a critical role in liver functioning.

At the final day of the experiment, researchers said, "total assessment 80% cases of this series were cured and 20% of patients were relieved".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of liver infection and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of liver diseases, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Calendula Which Processes Anti-Plaque and Gingivitis Activity, revealed by Human Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient which has a potential effect against the onset of gingivitis, according to studies.

Gingivitis is a condition of the inflammation of the gum. The most common cause of the disease is poor hygiene in the induction of bacterial biofilms attached to tooth surfaces.

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease, leading to the inflammation in inducing plaque buildup at the gumlineDaily brushing and flossing in most cases can remove the plaque, without the assistance of the dentist.

However, if daily brushing and flossing can not remove the plaque, please check with your dentist.

Untreated gingivitis can weaken the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place, causing to periodontitis and the loss of tooth or teeth.

Besides poor hygiene, smoking or chewing tobacco, medical conditions such as diabetes, long-term intake of certain medication such as oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, a denture that fit poorly,  broken fillings, pregnancy, and genetic deposition are some risk factors associated with the onset of gingivitis.

Dr. Nascimento GG, the lead scientist, in the concern of widespread obesity in risk of gingivitis launched a study of a total of 1211 children aged 8- to 12-year old from the public and private schools in Southern Brazil by a two-stage cluster method.

In the oral examination, the presence of plaque and gingival bleeding were found in 34.6% in Obese/overweight children, compared to compared to the mean and median values of gingival bleeding sites were 3.10 and 2.0 respectively in the group.

According to the In the sex-stratified analysis, researchers said, "overweight/obese boys presented a greater risk for gingivitis".

The discovery strongly suggested there is a closed link between gingivitis and people who are obese.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, the annual perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-

Researchers on finding natural ingredients for the prevention and treatment of with no side effects examined the herbal Calendula officinalis anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis activity.

240 patients having gingivitis (probing depth (PD) ≤3 mm), with a complaint of bleeding gums within the age group of 20-40 years enrolled with their informed consent were included in this study.

The subjects were randomly assigned into two groups - test group (n = 120) and control group (n = 120).

All the test group patients were advised to dilute 2 ml of tincture of calendula with 6 ml of distilled water and rinse their mouths once in the morning and once in the evening for six months. Similarly, the control group patients were advised to use 8 ml distilled water (placebo) as control mouthwash and rinse mouth twice daily for six months.

In the absence of scaling (that is, between the first and second visit), the test group showed a statistically significant reduction in the scores of plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), and oral hygiene index-simplified (OHI-S) compared to the control group, when the baseline scores were compared with the third month scores.

However, when scaling was performed during the third month (second visit), there was a statistically significant reduction in the scores of all parameters, when the third month scores were compared with the sixth-month scores in both groups, but the test group showed a significantly greater reduction in the PI, GI, SBI, and OHI-S scores compared to that of the control group.

These results clearly suggested that calendula mouthwash is effective in reducing dental plaque and gingivitis adjunctive to scaling, according to the researchers.

In order to reveal more information about herbal Calendula anti-gingivitis effects, researchers investigated the effects of a topic gel containing clobetasol propionate and Calendula officinalis L in an acetate tray over two years.

The study included 2 patients with a diagnosis of lichen planus presenting as DG, researchers found that the symptomatic outbreaks were delayed and presented as less severe symptoms in the two years follow-up.

The findings indicated the topic gel treatment reduces the length and severity of symptomatic outbreaks desquamative gingivitis.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be used as a mouthwash or topical gel for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis with no side effects, pending the result of a larger and multicenter human study

Herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana), the Natural Antibiotic Alternative

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara sagrada processed a bioactive compound emodin may have a potential and profound effect on reducing the risk and treatment of bacterial infection, according to studies.

According to the statistic, infectious diseases caused the death of 9.2 million deaths in 2013 worldwide, represented 17% of all deaths.
Bacterial infection is a result of the battle of the immune system against the multiplication of bacteria in some selected tissue or organ by the pathogens after scaping the assault of white blood cell in the first line of immune defense.

Bacterial infection can be caused by the spread through infected person coughing and sneezing and contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces, food, and water.

However, the most common risk factors of bacterial infection are tissue damage or injury. Believe or not, most bacteria tries to enter the body through wound are killed off during the acute phase of infection.

At the early phase, immune not only stimulates the blood vessels constriction to produce palette to cover the wound but also activates the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of the damage with an aim to kill off all the micro-invaders.

Most common conventional medicine for the treatment of bacterial infection is an injection of antibotics.

Due to overuse of such medication, some bacteria have development antibiotics resistances, such as Staphylococcus aureus ('golden staph' or MRSA) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are now resistant to benzylpenicillin.

New antibiotics may be effective, however, they can induce some side effects. Please make sure you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor if you are currently taking some antibiotic for the treament of infection.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America. The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient to treat bacterial infection examined the effects of emodin against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality.

In 17 different strains of the bacterium selected to the study, the combined activity of EM and two antimicrobial agents (AM, OX) against all strains resulted in a fractional inhibitory concentrations index (FICI) ranging from 0.37-0.5 and from 0.37-0.75, respectively.

The effect of EM with AM and OX was found to be synergistic or partially synergistic.

Furthermore, EM reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations of AM and OX. EM against MRSA infection.

In the comparison of the antibacterial effects of aloe- emodin and aloe and its contents of anthraquinone compounds, researchers evaluated the antibacterial activities of the extracts from the outer leaf of Aloe saponaria Haw, aloin and aloe-emodin against three Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria

Anthraquinone, aloin exhibited higher antibacterial activity [inhibition diameter > (7. 1 +/- 0.15) mm] than Aloe-emodin.

The antibacterial activity of Aloe was attributed to the concentration of anthraquinone, aloin in a dose-dependent manner.

The results clearly suggested that Aloe-emodin exerts a significant antibacterial effect to a lesser extent compared to levels of anthraquinone, aloin.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed a high amounts emodin may be considered an alternative antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infection, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Calendula, the Best in Speeding Up Wound Healing with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal may have a strong effect on speeding up wound healing, according to studies by a number of institutes.

Wound healing is a natural process of our body by restoring the function of the damage or injured tissue through several stages.

Most importantly, the early stage of wound healing is also known as an acute phase of infection, which starts as soon as the immune system sensing the tissue damage by stimulating the blood vessels to provide the damaged tissue with blood palette to cover the wound temporarily and activated the proteins associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all micro invaders.

In most cases, the immune first line of defense can destroy the pathogens and speed up the recovery of the damage through inducing fiber tissue re construction, new blood vessels.

However, overproduction of a proinflammatory cytokine in this phase may cause damage and death of nearby cells, leading the formation of scars.

If the immune system can not kill off all the invaded pathogen within a set of time, normally in 3-8 weeks, it will adapt to the new change, leading to low-grade inflammation, a major cause of several chronic ailments, including diabetes, herat diseases.

If the process of wound healing is disrupted, it may also lead to improper wound healing with complications, including inadequate scar formation, excessive scar formation, and a contracture formation,  an exaggeration of normal wound edge contraction forming deformities.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, a annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe. It has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for speeding up wound healing examined the effect of Calendula officinalis, an annual herb from the Mediterranean origin which is popularly used in wound healing and as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Injection of C. officinalis demonstrated significantly anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities in protecting the wound against infection.

Furthermore, C. officinalis also speed up the wound healing process by enhancing the angiogenic and fibroplastic properties.

The findings strongly suggested that herbal Calendula can act in a positive way on the inflammatory and proliferative phases of the healing process.

Moreover, in the evaluation of the effects of oral and topical application of Calendula officinalis flower extract on excision wounds made in rats, compared to the control of 51.1%, oral and topical application of Calendula showed a wound closure was 90.0%.

The extract treatment at a dose of 20 or 100 mg/kg b.wt reduced the period needed for re-epithelization to 14 and 13 days, respectively compared to 17.7 days in the control.

Additonally, the extract-treated group also exhibited a significant increase in the concentration of collagen. compared to the untreated animals.

Interestingly, in a total of 36 rats and 90 embryonated eggs used to evaluate healing and angiogenic activities of extracts and fractions of Calendula, through the induction of skin wounds and the chorioallantoic membrane, respectively, researchers found that
* Injection of calendula extract exerted an angiogenic activity in speeding up wound healing in both experimental models.

* The efficacy was not attributed to the signal protein produced by cells that stimulate the formation of blood vessels, but other unknown pro-angiogenic factors.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a functional remedy for speeding up wound healing with no side effects.

Herbal Chamomile, the Anti Skin Cancer Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Chamomile processed a high amount of antioxidant may have a profound and positive effect on reducing risk and treatment of skin cancer, according to studies.

Skin cancer is the medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin tissues due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of skin cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of skin tissues. However, at the advanced stage, the tumor cells can travel a distance away from the skin to infect other healthy tissue and organs, through lymph and blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Organs or system which is vulnerable to skin metastasis is lymph, lung, and liver.

Although family and personal history, history of sunburn, excessive sun exposure and people who live in sunny or high-altitude climates are associated with the risks of skin cancer, some researchers suggested that skin cancer in the Western world may be attributed to the misunderstanding the risk of sun exposure and the risk of unhealthy skin, as we still can see a lots of naked skin exposed to sunlight during the Summer months in the parks.

According to the statistic, 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. An estimated 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. causing the death of more than 3,000 people.

Dr. Honnavara N Ananthaswamy in the concern of the sunlight and risk of skin cancer wrote, " Laboratory studies have shown that UV-B region of the solar spectrum is responsible for this effect. The first step in UV skin carcinogenesis involves the induction of DNA damage".

And, "Occasional mistakes during the repair of this damage leads to the incorporation of wrong bases into the genetic material. The DNA damage that is left unrepaired may also disrupt cellular processes by obstructing the DNA and RNA synthesizing machineries and introduce wrong bases into the DNA. These types of mistakes often result in mutation leading to loss or inappropriate expression of affected genes".

The finding indicated the progression of skin cancer in long-term UV exposure and how the UV light induces the change of skin cells DNA.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and for the treatment of menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Researchers on finding a herbal medicine for the treatment of skin cancer which not only continues to rise but also accounts for approximately 40% of all cancers reported in the United States and  9,500 deaths per year, examined the effects of chamomile against reactive oxygen species (ROS) type free radicals in the initiation of skin cancer and aging.

Compared to other herbal medicines used in the study, chamomile demonstrated skin protective effects against oxidative stress through its antioxidant activity.

In vitro, chamomile modulated the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced upregulation of ROS free radicals in normal human skin fibroblasts.

According to the flow cytometry-based assay, the free radical inhibition of chamomile was attributed to a single ingredient but varying concentrations of herbal chamomile natural components.

Additional investigation of the chamomile anti-skin cancer activity, researchers examined the bioactive compound Apigenin, major active compound from herbal chamomile which was previously found to inhibit chemically induced ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and skin tumor promotion.

Increased of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) was associated with the expression of oxidative stress in animal chemical induction.

After mouse skin carcinogenesis was induced by exposure to a total dose of 40 J/cm2 UVB over 11 weeks, application of Apigenin (5 mumoles/200 microliters DMSO:acetone, 1:9) treatment from 12 hours before until 1 hour following UVA/B exposure was effective in inhibition (25-45% inhibition) of ODC activity measured at 28 hours following UVA/B exposure.

Treatment with 10 mumoles apigenin in 200 microliters DMSO:acetone (1:9) prior to each UVB exposure showed a reduction in cancer incidence (52% inhibition) and an increase in tumor-free survival, compared to control mice.

Interestingly, in salmon sperm, Apigenin (0-100 microM) did not prevent the production of photoproducts to cause damage to the cell DNA.

The results strongly suggested that Apigenin inhibited UVA/B induced ODC activity or UVB induced skin carcinogenesis through many unknown mechanisms instead of simply absorbing ultraviolet light or decreasing DNA damage.

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of skin cancer.

Herbal Chamomile, the Best Neuro-protective Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Chamomile processed a high amount of antioxidant may have a strong and profound neuroprotective effect against the onset of cognitive impairment, according to studies.

Cognitive impairment is a medical condition associated with a decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills.

Approximately 15 to 20% of cognitive impairment are diagnosed in people age 65 or older. However, if the condition of cognitive impairment gets worse over time, it eventually leads dementia that compromises social and/or occupational functioning.

In the early stage of cognitive impairment, patients may experience symptoms of hallucinations. delusions, personality changes, apathy, and some depression and anxiety symptoms.

If you are experienceing some of the above symptoms, please make you check with your doctors to rule out the possibility.

Although there are many factors associated with the onset of cognitive impairment, some researchers suggested that aging is the major cause of the condition in the Western world.

Therefore, finding a strategy for the delay of cognitive impairment in the elderly has become more urgent. Dr. Blanka Klimova, and colleagues in the dementia team at the University Hospital Hradec Kralove and University Hradec Kralove in the concern of the risk of cognitive impairment in aging wrote, " physical activities, such as walking and aerobic exercises, music therapy, adherence to Mediterranean diet, or solving crosswords, seem to be very promising lifestyle intervention tools"

And, "The results indicate that non-pharmacological lifestyle intervention activities should be intense and possibly done simultaneously in order to be effective in the prevention of cognitive decline. In addition, more longitudinal randomized controlled trials are needed in order to discover the most effective types and the duration of these intervention activities in the prevention of cognitive decline, typical of aging population groups"

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituent and for the treatment of menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Scientists on finding an herbal remedy which processes neuroprotective effects examined the chamomile activity against the onset of oxidative stress which is considered a key role in the pathophysiology of many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease.

Aluminum fluoride (AlF₄⁻)-induced oxidative stress in rats selected to the study were divided randomly into group I received normal saline; group II received AlF₄⁻ (negative control); groups III, IV, and V received 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg, orally, German chamomile methanol extract (GCME) along with AlF₄⁻; and group VI received quercetin (25 mg/kg, i.p.) + AlF₄⁻, respectively.

The experiment included a 10 days treatment with GCME before the animal induced oxidative stress by administering AlF₄⁻ through drinking water for 7 days.

Administration of GCME inhibited the levels of oxidative stress through increasing the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO).

Compared with the negative control group (P < 0.001), chamomile displayed a potent neuroprotective action against oxidative brain damage.

In rat induced oxidative stress by global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, application of methanolic extract showed dose-dependent neuroprotective activity by a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) similar to that of the above study.

The treatment group also showed a significantly reduced vertebral infarction area in extract treated groups, compared to the untreated group.

Dr. Chandrashekhar VM, the lead scientists, said, "The methanolic extract of Matricaria recutita L. showed potent neuroprotective activity against global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury-induced oxidative stress in rats".

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile which demonstrates the brain neurons protective effect against oxidative stress in the initiation of neurodegenerative diseases, may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of dementia.
