Alternative Therapy: Yoga In Reduced Symptoms of Patient with Fibromyalgia

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga may be used as a form of therapeutic exercise in reduced risk and symptoms of fibromyalgia, the study by the Oregon Health & Science University suggested.

According to the American College of Rheumatology 1990 criteria for the Classification of Fibromyalgia  are
(1) Widespread pain in combination with
(2) Tenderness at 11 or more of the 18 specific tender point sites(a) as a result in responding to pressure.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

A study in comparison of post treatment data with 3-month follow-up data, from a per protocol sample of 21 fibromyalgia women in the immediate treatment group who had completed yoga treatment and 18 women in the wait-list group who had also completed treatment, researchers found that
1. Yoga group displayed a significant and positive post treatment results in compared to the wait-list group.
2. Both groups experienced similar improved results of 31.9% according to Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire Revised (FIQR) assay
3. After adjusting to other risk factors, 3 months follow-up results showed all patients sustained most of their post treatment gains, with the FIQR Total Score of 21.9% improvement.

Dr. Carson JW, the led author said, "Yoga practice rates were good, and more practice was associated with more benefit for a variety of outcomes".

More importantly, in the screened Clinicaltrials.Gov, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus (through December 2010) and the reference sections of original studies for meditative movement therapies (MMT) in FMS, researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen indicated that
1. Yoga attendees benefit from many aspects of yoga lessons, particularly in pain, fatigue, depression and HRQOL
2. Yoga groups expressed less sleep disturbances and thiis effect has a maintained range of a median of 4.5 months.in compared to control
3. The participants Drop out rate because of adverse events was 3.1%.
4. No serious adverse events were reported in yoga group.

Taking altogether, yoga may be used as an integrated form of exercise in conjunction with standard care or alone to reduced symptoms of patients with fibromyalgia

Alternative Therapy: Yoga, in The Early Onset and Treatment of Hyperglycemia

Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormal blood glucose in the blood stream and considered as the early sign of distastes development.

People who participated in yoga class are less likely to develop hyperglycemia, according to the India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the review of data collected on 98 subjects (67 male, 31 female), ages 20-74 years, with hypertension, coronary artery disease, rmellitus, and a variety of other illnesses, attended yoga class, researchers found that yoga treatment showed a significant improvement in hyperglycemia or and hypercholesterolemia through decreased fasting plasma glucose and total triglycerides as well as the preferred ratio of total cholesterol to high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

Furthermore, in a total of 30 male diabetic patients attending diabetic clinic and 30 non-diabetic male volunteers constituted control group, conducted in the Department of Physiology and Diabetic clinic of a tertiary care teaching hospital over period of two years, all yoga attendees showed a significant reduction in mean values of FBS and PPBS at the end of six months when compared with the mean values before participating and in compared to control.

In fact, yoga therapy also found to be effective in improved glucose metabolism values in adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Further more, in a  randomized, intervention controlled trial recruited of 90 adolescents aged between 15 and 18 years who met the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS with yoga group practiced suryanamaskara, asanas, pranayama, and meditation 1 hour per day each day for 12 weeks, while another group practiced conventional physical exercises, researchers indicated that students in the yoga group displayed a better and significant changes in fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose, and improved insulin resistance in compared to exercise group.

Dr. Nidhi R, the lead author said, "Yoga was found to be more effective than conventional physical exercises in improving glucose, lipid, and insulin values, including insulin resistance values, in adolescent girls with PCOS independent of anthropometric changes".

Taking altogether, yoga may be used as a potential therapeutic source in reduced risk and treatment of Hyperglycemia for prevention of early onset of diabetes..

Food Therapy: Coffee and Coffee Caffeine in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Oral Cancer

Kyle J. Norton

Coffee and coffee caffeine may have a profound effect in reduced risk and treatment of oral cancer, a renowned cancer society study suggested.

Oral cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the mouth region, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx. At he later stage, infectious cells may travel a distance away from the original site to other tissues and organs.

Coffee, second to green tea is one most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a prospective US cohort study begun in 1982 by the American Cancer Society, including 968,432 men and women with cancer free at enrollment, 868 deaths due to oral/pharyngeal cancer occurred during 26 years of follow-up, researchers file the following results, without modifying other factors such as sex, smoking status, or alcohol use.
1. In compared to no/occasional drinkers, patients drinking more than 4 cups of caffeine coffee per day showed a risk of oral/pharyngeal cancer death reduced by 49% with relative risk of cancer developing of .51.
2. Also in compared to the no and occasional groups, patients drinking more than 4 cups of coffee per day had a relative risk ratio of .61.

According to the Epidemiology Research Program, American Cancer Society, intake of caffeinated coffee showed a significantly inverse association in reduced risk and motility of oral/pharyngeal cancer, linearly in dose depending manner.
Additionally, in data extracted from the Miyagi Cohort Study in Japan, including 38,679 subjects aged 40-64 years with no previous history of cancer, 157 cases of oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal cancers identified during 13.6 years of follow-up, returned food frequency questionnaires from participants expressed the results as follow
1. Patients consumed > or =1 cups of coffee per day had a relative risk ratio of .51 in compared to no drinkers. group.
2. In take of caffeine coffee showed a inverse association with cancer incidence, regardless of sex and cancer site.

More interestingly, the study also emphasized that risk of cancer reduced in caffeine coffer consumption, even with people have been identified with high risk in cancer developing.

Dr. said, 'Hazard ratios were estimated by the Cox proportional hazards regression model. The risk of oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal cancers was inversely associated with coffee consumption".

More importantly, in support of the above analysis, the study on cases of esophageal cancer(395) in compared to 1066 cases of controls conducted by the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche "Mario Negri" proposed that the same relative risk of  0.6  in both  oral/pharyngeal, and  esophageal cancer also found in subjects, drinking over >3 cups/ day. And there was no association between caffeine coffee in expression of reduced risk of cancers.

Taking altogether. coffee and coffee caffeine have a potential use as functional and therapeutic product in reduced risk and treatment of oral cancer. But Dr. Hildebrand JS, the lead author said, "Research is needed to elucidate biologic mechanisms whereby coffee might help to protect against these often fatal cancers.".

Food Therapy: Coffee A Potent and Functional Food in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Hyperglycemia

Kyle J. Norton

Epidemiological studies agreed that drinking coffee and coffee caffeine may have a potentially positive effect in reduced risk and treatment of hyperglycemia.

Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized by abnormal high of blood glucose in the blood stream.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the Nagoya University, the study of antidiabetic effect of coffee and caffeine in spontaneously diabetic KK-A(y) mice,  given regular drinking water (controls) or 2-fold diluted coffee for 5 weeks, suggested that group treatment with coffee and coffee caffeine expressed a ameliorated development of hyperglycemia and improved insulin sensitivity in compared to water treatment group.

The efficacy of coffee and coffee caffeine in reduced risk of hyperglycemia may also be attributed to regulation of white adipose tissue mRNA levels in elevated the production of anti inflammatory mytokines.

Furthermore, researchers in the differentiation of the liver activity also found that although similar in treatment
1. Coffee injection improved the fatty liver and
2. Coffee caffeine exhibited the ameliorated hyperglycemia and  improved fatty liver.

In further to strengthen the result of the above analysis, the Nagoya University and other institution conducted a study related to the effect of coffee on pancreatic β-cells against induction of diabetes by streptozotocin (STZ), indicated that mice treated with coffee expressed a lowered or significantly lowered serum glucose concentration in compared to water ingestion group.

Dr. Kobayashi M, the lead researcher said, "coffee ingestion also suppressed the deterioration of hyperglycemia in diabetic mice which had been already injected with STZ" and "coffee ingestion prevented the development of STZ-induced diabetes and suppressed hyperglycemia in STZ-diabetic mice. Caffeine or decaffeinated coffee ingestion did not significantly suppress STZ-induced hyperglycemia".

Other, in the study of postprandial hyperglycemia as a direct and independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases showed that injection of coffee polyphenol may improve postprandial hyperglycemia and vascular endothelial function by increasing GLP-1 release in affecting gut motility, inhibit gastric acid secretion, and inhibit glucagon secretion. and/or reducing oxidative stress.

More importantly, in a total of Nineteen subjects consumed a test meal with either a placebo- or extract coffee polyphenol CPE-containing beverage, researcher showed that treatment group displayed a significantly lower peak postprandial increase in blood glucose in compared to placebo beverage group.

According to the correlation analysis, treatment group also improved impaired Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) postprandial response in associated with blood glucose increase after injecion of the CPE beverage.

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may be considered as a functional food used as therapeutic sunstance in reduced risk and treatment of  hyperglycemia.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga in Decreased Labor Pain and Improved Delivery Outcome

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga therapy may be considered as a secondary intervention combined with standard application in improved labor pain and delivery outcome and reduced risk of pregnancy complication.

Yoga, the accident technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes and supported by health advocates.

In a randomized control trial conducted with sixty primiparous women, aged 18-35 years old, randomly assigned to either an antenatal yoga program consisted of a 1-h supervised yoga class, three times a weekly, starting at 26 weeks gestation or control groups, researchers after taking into account of risk factors found that at the delivery stage
1. Yoga group experienced less intensive pain, and at 2 h after the first and the second measurements in compared to control
2. Natural delivery was found more in the yoga intervention group in compared to more percentage of cesarean section in control
3. Yoga group also demonstrated decreased frequency of labor induction
4. And a shorter duration of the second and third stages of labor

With all information collected, Dr. Jahdi F, the led author said, "Yoga during pregnancy may contribute to a reduction pain of labor and improved adequacy of childbirth".

Other study in support to the above analysis, conducted by the Prince of Songkla University, in examined the effects of a yoga program involved six, 1-h sessions at prescribed weeks of gestation during pregnancy, on maternal comfort, labor pain, and birth outcomes. also suggested that
1. Yoga group expressed higher levels of maternal comfort during labor and 2h post-labor and
2. Less labor pain
3. Although both groups experienced same pain increased and maternal comfort at the beginning, yoga group showed a decreased pain and discomfort as labor progressed
4. Lastly, women in yoga class had a shorter duration of the first stage of labor and total time of labor.

More importantly, In a total of 335 women between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, attending the antenatal clinic at Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital in Bangalore, India, enrolled in a prospective, matched, observational study with 169 women in the yoga group and 166 women in the control group, researchers emphasized that women participated in yoga lesson illustrated less complications such as preterm labor, isolated intrauterine growth retardation growth retardation and pregnancy-induced hypertension at the day of delivery in comparison to those in control.

Taking altogether, yoga intervention not only improved labor pain and delivery outcome but also reduced risk pregnant complications, therefore yoga may be recommended to pregnant women as a preventive measurements, particularly in high risk groups.

Food Therapy: Excessive Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake In Risk Of Pregnancy Loss?

By Kyle J. Norton

Bad news for pregnant women and coffee lovers, maternal caffeine intake may associate to increased risk of pregnancy loss, a renowned institute study suggested

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Pregnancy lost is a natural death of an embryo or fetus before it is born, including spontaneous abortion, miscarry, stillbirth....

According to the joint study led by the National University of Singapore and National University Health System, additional intake of 1 cup of coffee in women who are regular coffee drinkers similar to 100 mg/d increment caffeine intake was associated with 7% higher risk of pregnancy loss.

In a total of 130 456 participants and 3429 cases in fourteen included studies, researchers found that women with
1. No or very low caffeine intake, have relative risk of pregnancy loss of 1.02
2. Moderate intake (150-349 mg/d) showed an increased relative risk of 1·16
3. High intake (350-699 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·40
4. Very high intake (≥ 700 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·72

The risks of pregnancy loss were increased linearly and correlatively to amounts of cup of coffee intake per day.

Furthermore, a case-control and cohort review study reported in English, the exposure of caffeine/coffee consumption during pregnancy, from selected 26 studies included (20 of caffeine and eight of coffee) suggested that the relative risk ratio of pregnancy loss due to caffeine consumption was 1.32

The study also found that risk of pregnancy loss increased substantially to 19% for every increased caffeine intake of 150 mg/day and every additional 2 cups of coffee intake, risk of pregnancy loss increased by 8%.

Although, there are many implications associated to the pregnancy loss such as ages of woman and man, greater body mass index,..... excessive coffee drinking may be one of the avoidable risk factor.

Taking all together, there is no doubt that higher intake of coffee during pregnancy induced high risk of pregnancy loss but according to the statistic, North American women seldomly drink more than 4 cups/day, so we may be in the safe zones.

Food Therapy: Coffee Caffeine In Risk of Ovarian Cancer Incidence?

By Kyle J. Norton

Bad news for postmenopausal women coffee lovers, caffeinated coffee may have a positive effect in exhibited risk for epithelial ovarian cancer, a study by a respectable institute proposed.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Epithelial ovarian tumor also known as Surface epithelial-stromal tumor, is a result of irregular cells growth on the surface of the ovary. Epithelial ovarian tumor is the most common form of ovarian cancer accounted for over 90% of ovarian cancer of all cases.

According to the University of Minnesota, coffee consumption of more than five cups a day may be associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women.

In the evaluated the risk of coffee and caffeine intake against epithelial ovarian cancer in a prospective cohort study of 29,060 postmenopausal women, returned questionnaire from ovarian cancer patients from 1986 to 2004. suggested that increased risk of epithelial ovarian cancer incidence was found in women who consumed more than 5 cups per days.in compared to the lesser cup drinkers and non drinkers.

The study also indicated that decaffeinated coffee and caffeine showed no statistically significantly associated with ovarian cancer incidence.

Other, in the evaluated enzyme CYP1A2 in the metabolism of coffee from the data collected from a preliminary investigation conducted in Hawaii of 164 epithelial ovarian cancer cases and 194 controls, women with CYP1A2 genotype modifies, the results showed that coffee consumption in these population expressed a substantially increased risk of ovarian cancer in compared to women who did not drink regular coffee.

Furthermore, Women with any CYP1A2 C allele and women with the A/A genotype were associated to similar risk of ovarian cancer (OR = 1.1, 95% CI = 0.7-1.7) but the increased risk of ovarian cancer was stronger among women with the A/A genotype than among women with any C allele.

Dr. Goodman MT, the lead author said., "preliminary data suggest a modest positive association of caffeine and coffeeconsumption with the OR for ovarian cancer that may be modified by CYP1A2 genotype and exposures, such as cruciferous vegetable consumption, that influence CYP1A2 expression".

However, according to the Information on coffee consumption collected from 91,767 women at baseline in the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study, coffee intake was found to reduced risk of various types of cancer, including ovarian caner, with no statistic different in women who drank more than 3 and up to 7 cups/day, and women who drank ≤1 cup/day.

Taking together, intake of coffee regularly with less than 5 cups per day may be associated to ameliorated risk of ovarian cancer incidence, but women with  enzyme CYP1A2  modified and  C allele and post menopause women should consult with their doctor before applying.
