Endometriosis: The Effects of Chinese herb Licorice(revised edition with references)

Some articles have been used as references in medical research, such as international journal Pharma and Bio science, ISSN 0975-6299.

During the last stage of the menstrual cycle, normally a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood, instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body to cause endometriosis. Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

The licorice plant is a legume and native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It has been used in treating women with endometriosis because of its isoflavones property.

The effects
1. Hormone balancing
Since it contains (Glabridin) isoflavones, it helps to regulate the estrogen and progesterone hormones by blocking the enzyme that breaks down progesterone. Because of its phytoestrogenic activity(1), it can also raise or lower the levels of estrogen(2) in the women body which is essential for women with endometriosis. Its Puerarin, may have the potential to treat endometriosis through suppression of the tissue invasion by endometriotic stromal cells (ESCs)(3).

2. Menstrual pain
Since licorice also helps in protein and fat metabolism by secreting the steroid hormones known to stimulate the production of androgen testosterone, it helps to balance the over-production of some members in the prostaglandins hormone that cause menstrual pain(4).

3. Nervous system(5)(6)
Licorice contains substances similar to adrenal cortical hormone which helps to increase function of adrenal glands. This helps to reduce tension of nervous system during distress(7).

4. Licorice and Immune system(8)
Licorice is also a powerful herb that has been proclaimed to help the liver in protein and fat metabolism resulting in enhancing the immune system(8) in fighting against forming of free radicals(9)(10) and endometrial implants and adhesion(10)(11).

Endometriosis: The Effects of Wild Yam (revised edition with references)

Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.
Wild yam is a species of a twining tuberous vine that is found growing wild in North America.
It has been used in herbal medicine in treating menstrual cramps and to increase liver function.

The effects
1. Hormone balancing(5)
Wild yam helps to increase liver function in protein and fat metabolism, which helps to stimulate the production of weak estrogen(1)(5) and enhanced production progesterone(5) through bile secretion, leading to lower levels of bad estrogen(9) resulting in lowering the risk of cell abnormality such as endometrial implants and adhesion, and cancer(4).

 2. Nervous system
By increasing the levels of good cholesterol in the blood stream, wild yam helps to inhibit the bad cholesterol, thereby increasing the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to the cell in the nervous system(6) which decreases the symptoms of endometriosis similar to those in menopause(7)(8).
.
3. Immune system(3)
wild yam enhances immune fighting against the invasion of bacteria, virus and irregular cells growth (2), including breast cancer caused by Estrogen receptor negative; ER(4)

 4. Menstrual cramps
Since it helps to balance the levels of estrogen and progesterone(5), it reduces the risk of menstrual cramps(1) caused by hormonal imbalance of above hormones.

Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Black haw is also known as black haw viburnum, or stag bush. It is a native to southeastern North America. The herb has been used in treating menstrual cramp and morning sickness for women with or without endometriosis.

The effects
 1. Nervous system(2)
It is said that scopoletin(1) in the black haw helps in strengthening the nervous system by regulating the serotonin hormone, thereby it reduces the tension of nervous system and symptoms of endometriosis such as anxiety(3).

 2. Immune system(4)
Black haw contains scopoletin, The substance is said to help immune system in fighting against bacteria, virus invasion, and forming of free redials including endometrial implants and adhesion(5).

3. Calming uterus contraction(6)
Black is said to have uterine sedative tonic containing salicin, the aspirin-like substance. It helps to relax the contraction of uterus during and after menstruation leading to reduce tension in the uterus and abdominal pain(7).

4. Uterus muscles(6)
Deficiency of bile caused by bile duct blockage increases the risk of imbalance of prostaglandins hormones(10) during menstrual cycle that leads to overactive uterine muscles resulting in menstrual pain(9) in the abdominal region(7). Black haw is said to help remove the blockage, thereby increasing the liver function(8) in balancing the prostaglandin hormones.
